Learning spaces that support a variety of learning and teaching styles facilitates all types of learners to reach their full potential. by permitting private and public areas in every space, each student has the opportunity to shape their education and decide where and how they learn. incorporating connections in the space is key for active learning. bridges are used to provide ways of transportation to connect people and places. drawing inspiration from the chesapeake bay bridge, the concept for the next university space is a bridge. allowing students and professors to engage with one another in and outside of the classroom is beneficial for learning to occur because engagement supports learning. with an emphasis on spatial efficiency, elevated seating will be incorporated to provide more seating options that allow each student to have the best seat in the room. the bridge concept calls for a clustered organization. the architectural equivalents to the concept are repetition, industrial building materials, asymmetry, negative space, and hierarchy. Active learning classroom repetition and asymmetry portray the balance of private and public areas throughout the space. negative space is shown through the use of openings and custom furniture. industrial building materials and hierarchy relate to the aesthetics of the space. because next university caters to diverse learners, planning for a range of user behaviors and needs is very important and requires strong consideration on how differently students will engage with their work, their peers, and their instructors within the learning environments.
