TOPS Tech - Recent Changes

  • Beginning with 2016-2017 high school graduates TOPS Tech Award may be

used only:

  • to pursue a short-term training and education program and/or
  • including skill, occupational, vocational, technical, certificate, and academic
  • an associate's degree
  • in a program of study that the Workforce Investment Council (WIC) and the Board of

Regents (BOR) determine are aligned to state workforce priorities.

  • Currently enrolled students receiving the TOPS Tech award
  • grandfathered - if enrolled in a program of study not approved by the Workforce

Investment Council and the Board of Regents

  • will continue to receive their award:
  • until they complete their current program of study or
  • change to a program approved by WIC and BOR
  • will not continue to receive their award:
  • if they change their program of study to a program not approved by WIC and BOR.

  • Be an 11th or 12th grade student in a Louisiana public high school
  • Pursue an industry-based occupational or vocational credential in a

public college or university that is considered a Top Demand Occupation

  • Have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 2.00
  • n a 4.00 scale
  • Score a 15 or above on the mathematics AND English portion of the

Pre-ACT or the ASPIRE, or on the ACT, or the equivalent concordant value on the SAT, or have achieved a silver level score on the assessments of the ACT WorkKeys system

  • Have prepared a 5-year education and career plan

Retention Requirements

  • Remain in “Good Standing” as an 11th or 12th grade student in a Louisiana public

high school

  • Maintain a 2.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale on all high school courses attempted
  • Continue to pursue one or more courses leading to a credential in an Eligible

Program

  • Remain in “Good Standing” with the public or nonpublic college or approved

training provider

  • Maintain steady academic progress

Award Benefits

  • Award is limited to six credit hours per semester
  • Not available for summer sessions
  • Grades earned in dual enrollment courses will be included in the calculation of

the TOPS cumulative GPA after the first semester in college.

TOPS Tech Early Start

  • Limited to six credit hours per semester or twelve credit hours per college academic year.
  • Provides a payment of $50 per credit hour with a limit of $300 per semester.
  • Students have the potential to earn 24 credit hours (in 11th and 12th grade) thus starting college with first year

completed.
