  1. College of Engineering (CoE) Transfer Admission Process Jessica Regan Transfer Admissions and Advising Coordinator College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin - Madison 608-262-4822 jessica.regan@wisc.edu www .engr .wisc.edu Transfer Advisors Conference, Oct. 12, 2016, 1:05-1:40 pm

  2. 12 Degree-Granting Programs in CoE http://www.engr.wisc.edu/future/coe-future-undergraduate-choosing-a-major.html • Biomedical • Engineering Physics • Chemical • Geological • Civil • Industrial • Computer • Materials Science & Engineering • Electrical • Mechanical • Engineering • Nuclear Mechanics

  3. 80 Credit Limit for Transfer to CoE 80 Credit Limit - students who have earned more than 80 credits at the time of application are not eligible to apply for admission to the College of Engineering. Applications from second-degree candidates are no longer accepted. The 80 credits include: • All credits completed at the time of application, including UW-Madison credits and transferable credits from other colleges and universities The 80 credits do not include: • In-progress credits (at the time of application) • Retroactive foreign language credits • Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Examination Program (CLEP) credits • Advanced Level (A-Level) credits • UW-Madison calculus credits awarded by examination The credit limit does not apply to candidates at other institutions who are in transfer agreement programs with the CoE.

  4. Off-Campus Transfer Path to CoE: a Two-Stage Process https://www.engr.wisc.edu/academics/student-services/academic-advising/transfer-students/ Admitted to UW- Apply for Prepare for Madison in Direct ST AGE 1 Transfer Intended CoE Admission to Program Intended Major Progression Complete Requirements Graduation Met Determination of ST AGE 2 Submit Requirements Progression Supplemental Progression Complete Before Transfer CoE Application Requirements GCR15 in 2 (GCR for Off- Not Met Semesters Campus Students) * General College Requirements (GCR) adopted Fall 2015

  5. Admission to UW-Madison in Intended CoE Program (Stage 1) • UW-Madison Transfer Admission Expectations • Indicators of “ good match ” for engineering studies • Consistently high/upward grade trends • Do not exceed the 80 Credit Limit

  6. Admission to CoE in Intended CoE Program Indicators of “ good match ” for engineering studies, such as… – Academic record that indicates likelihood of success as a CoE student • Course work that shows intention to pursue engineering study • Several math and science courses from the General College Requirements • Success in increasingly rigorous course work, across subjects • Success in full-time course load – Co-curricular involvement showing leadership, teamwork, creativity , etc. – Application statement discussing interest in engineering; can address academic factors of concern – Letter of recommendation attesting to student ’ s academic ability

  7. Off-Campus Transfer Path to CoE: a Two-Stage Process https://www.engr.wisc.edu/academics/student-services/academic-advising/transfer-students/ Admitted to UW- Apply for Prepare for Madison in Direct ST AGE 1 Transfer Intended CoE Admission to Program Preferred Major Progression Complete Requirements Graduation Met Determination of ST AGE 2 Submit Requirements Progression Supplemental Progression Complete Before Transfer CoE Application Requirements GCR15 in 2 (GCR for Off- Not Met Semesters Campus Students) * General College Requirements (GCR) adopted Fall 2015

  8. Determination of Progression (Stage 2) • Following admission by UW- Madison Office of Admission and Recruitment • Submit supplemental application for determination of progression • Meet/Exceed the General College Requirements for Off-Campus Transfer Students • Demonstrate likelihood for academic success in intended program

  9. CoE General College Requirements (GCR) Effective Fall 2015 For Off-Campus Transfer Students

  10. Meeting Progression Before Transfer Indicators (not guarantees) of “ strong match ” for the intended program – Academic record that indicates likelihood of success in the program • Example: engineering course work (if available); additional course work in chemistry and/or biology for chemical engineering, biomedical engineering • Strong grade patterns across subjects, including composition and liberal studies – Most successful applicants: Core GPA range 3.2-4.0, 3.5 or higher for departments that have greatest demand (BME, CBE, CMPE, ME) – Application statement that discusses reasons for pursuing the specific program

  11. Meeting Progression After Transfer After admission to CoE, progression is guaranteed if GCR15 is met . Transfer students admitted to the CoE who need to meet progression requirements (GCR15), must … • Complete course/credit/GPA requirements within two semesters – Fulfill the General College Requirements (GCR15) and meet GPA benchmarks. – Note: transfer credits, but not transfer grades, are considered in the review . • Consult with their assigned professional advisor – Plan for intended and alternate engineering programs • Consult with advisors across campus to identify a parallel plan and keep options open.

  12. Notification of Program Progression Status • CoE will notify students in early Feb. (for spring) or July (for fall) • If progression is satisfied before transfer , students will begin in their selected program knowing they only must meet graduation requirements. • If progression is not satisfied before transfer , students remain in their CoE program and must satisfy GCR15 requirements for CoE students within two semesters in residency. • Agreement programs with CoE exceed the General College Requirements; therefore, students in these programs are considered for meeting progression immediately. – Engineering Transfer Blueprint with Madison College – Transfer Program with College of Menominee Nation – Dual Degree

  13. Pre-transfer Tips • Explore engineering and engineering majors. – Intro to engineering course – CoE websites – Personal network, job shadow , campus career center – Experience full-time semester(s) with challenging course work • Make steady (vs. speedy) progress. – ake action if grades dip below “ B. ” T • Utilize resources at current campus so they are prepared to do so at UW-Madison • Expand interests • Keep plans flexible and identify alternatives

  14. Off-Campus Course Options Recommended, not required for Required for admission/progression transfer students Comm Part A Intro to engineering course Math 221, 222 Physics 201/207 or EMA 201 Common to Several Programs Chem 103-104 or 109 Microeconomics Comp sci programming Required in all programs Differential equations Math 234 Differential eq + linear alg Physics 202/208 Intro organic chem Ethnic studies Foreign language can be Liberal studies (humanities, social helpful for study abroad science)

  15. Post-transfer Tips CoE transfer students often find tha t… • Courses are more time consuming and challenging than expected. • Using academic support is central to engineering study . • Enrichment course work (for interest, not just what ’ s required in the curriculum) helps to balance semester loads. • Finding a social community eases the transfer transition. • Work hours have to be reduced. • Their grades improve after the first semester, and they graduate strong.
