High School Counselors

PRIMARY POINT OF CONTACT FOR STUDENTS FACILITATE COLLABRATION BETWEEN FAMILIES AND OTHER EDUCATORS PROVIDE ACADEMIC ADVISING FOR ALL STUDENTS FOCUS ON ACADEMIC, COLLEGE & CAREER, AND PERSONAL/SOCIAL EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

High School Counseling (grades 9 to 12)

August / September

  • Meet new transfer students and families, create schedules, give tours of the buildings
  • Counselors attend freshman orientation and then meet with incoming freshman to adjust schedules

as needed

  • Meet with all students in grades 9 through 12 to process schedule change requests
  • Meet with seniors in multiple extended homerooms to discuss the college application process
  • Review senior transcripts, enter summer school grades, and prepare final transcripts that will be sent

to colleges the first week of October

  • Meet with students in all grades levels as needed with respect to academic progress, adjustment,

social emotional issues, etc.

  • Meet with parents as needed and/or as requested (these meetings take place throughout the entire

year)

October/November

  • Administer the PreAct to sophomores, the PSAT to juniors (October 16, 2019)
  • Meet with seniors to assist with the college application process individually, in the college application lab, and on 10/16/19 in

classrooms

  • Host a senior parent meeting to discuss the college application process (October 7, 2019)
  • Host a financial aid night to discuss the FAFSA and other college funding (October 3, 2019)
  • Process transcripts, write letters of recommendation, and submit documentation to colleges (begins October 2, 2019)
  • Meet with students in all grade levels as needed to discuss 1st quarter progress reports and report cards
  • Host college representatives individually and at mini on-site college fairs (10/8/2019, 10/15/2019, 10/22/2019)
  • Meet with freshmen in group level meetings to discuss: academic achievement, social involvement, academic support and the

importance of making good decisions (October 29, 2019)

  • Progress monitoring continues and schedules are adjusted as needed for students in all grade levels
  • Counselors request and attend Instructional Support Team (IST) meetings as needed throughout the year
  • Counselors meet with the juniors in a group meeting to discuss the college search process (November 19th, 2019)

December / January

  • Continue to process senior transcripts, write letters of recommendation, and submit documentation to

colleges

  • Return PSAT results to juniors and discuss the process for registering for SAT and ACT (December 10, 2019)
  • Return PreACT results to sophomore students/parents via mail
  • Push into the junior English classes and educate the students on the Naviance college search features

(December 2nd through December 6th)

  • Host a junior parent meeting to present information on the college process (December 13, 2019)
  • Meet with freshman, sophomores and juniors in group meetings to discuss the scheduling process for the

following year

  • Review progress reports and 2nd quarter report cards
  • Meet with seniors to discuss Early Decision notifications

February/ March

  • Send midyear reports for all seniors to all of the colleges to which they have applied
  • Conduct individual scheduling meetings with every student in grades 9 to 11
  • Conduct individual college planning meetings with all juniors (these can run through early May)
  • Attend CSE meetings for students with IEP’s
  • Host an RCC free application day for seniors
  • Host individual visits from colleges
  • Remind juniors to register and take the SAT and ACT (these tests should be taken in March, April, May
  • r June)
  • Meet with students to discuss 3rd quarter progress reports as needed
  • Organize and provide a bus trip for sophomores and juniors to BOCES to explore CTEC

April / May

  • Work with seniors on final decisions for college
  • Review senior transcripts, grades and diploma types for graduation
  • Continue individual college planning meetings for all juniors
  • Host an admissions representative panel discussion for juniors and their

parents (Hear it From the Reps – April 1, 2020)

  • Review 3rd quarter report cards
  • Prepare and send warning letters to the parents of students at risk of

failing a course for the year

  • Resolve scheduling conflicts for all students in grades 9 through 12 for

the following year

June / July

  • Review all senior records
  • Finalize the transcripts
  • Prepare the diplomas
  • Submit final transcripts to colleges
  • Meet with students who failed a course
  • Proctor final exams
