What is the Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency?

 The Indiana Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is an award made

by a participating school corporation, charter school or accredited nonpublic high school designating on a student’s transcript that the student has attained a high level of proficiency, sufficient for meaningful use in college and a career, in one or more languages in addition to English.

Why should my school/district implement this?

  • The Certificate of Multilingual Proficiency is a formal

validation of an Intermediate High level of proficiency that benefits both world language and English Learner students.

  • This will serve students entering the workforce as a

confirmation of their linguistic skillset.

  • For university-bound students, the Certificate will be

noted on a student’s transcript. IDOE is still working with universities to determine if this can be utilized to grant credit to students as the assessments are external and not locally-created.

How do students earn the CoMP?

English Language Arts

  • Students

must earn at least eight (8) credits in English/ Language Arts

English Language Arts

  • Students

must pass the English/ Language Arts, Grade 10 graduation qualifying exam

World Language

  • Students must

earn at least six (6) credits in a single World Language through coursework. See note for English Learners below.

  • Students

must pass an approved external assessment in the world language* at an Intermediate High level of proficiency

World Language

* If a student enrolls in school already proficient in a world language, a score of Intermediate High or beyond on the World Language assessment can serve as a demonstration of proficiency to allow a school to award the 6 world language credits to a student in lieu of coursework.
