Child Care Challenges:

Casella Survey Results

  • Lack of capacity for infants at child care centers
  • Scheduling difficulties based on work hours and child care center

drop off and pick up times, and an associated fee with early drop off

  • r late pick up of children
  • Cost prohibitive to send children to a registered child care program

These challenges were creating increased stressors on parents, who professed lack of concentration and commitment at work and absenteeism based on frequent child care concerns

Child Care Scholarship Pilot Program 2018

Why this approach?

  • Wide geography of Casella employees, wanted the program to have

a positive impact on all employees in the State of Vermont

  • Providing a child care scholarship would help supplement payment

to high quality, registered care providers

  • In conjunction with offering some flexibility around work hours to

accommodate child care center hours, this option was deemed to be most helpful and impactful for Casella employees in Vermont

Child Care Scholarship Pilot Program 2018

Lessons Learned:

  • Communicate often and with purpose to employees, fully explain the

program benefits and criteria

  • Remain fluid – the needs of our employees change over time, i.e.

full time to part time care, number of children in care, changing of registered providers

  • Create a tracking mechanism for the program that is informative and

easy to use The Child Care Scholarship has been continued for 2019, and will be formalized as part of the Benefits Enrollment process for Casella employees working in Vermont for 2020.
