  4. Coast Dairies – Past, Present + Future • Coast Dairies was privately owned and managed as a dairy farm for decades • The land (5,800 acres) is now publicly owned by BLM, with strong development restrictions and resource protections in place thanks to county leaders and north coast residents • The Trust for Public Land deeded the property to BLM for the purpose of opening it for public enjoyment and stewarding the resources • As a National Monument, Coast Dairies will be recognized by the federal government and managed in perpetuity as a national conservation priority www.cotonicoastdairies.org

  5. Why seek national monument designation for Coast Dairies? • To increase understanding and appreciation of the land’s diverse values (natural, scenic, recreational, cultural + historic) • To ensure that current and future generations have meaningful opportunities to experience and enjoy this special landscape • To foster increased community engagement and collaboration in support of good stewardship • To attract increased funding and other resources for interpretation, stewardship, outdoor education for schools, and public enjoyment of the land • To ensure that the land will be managed as a conservation priority as part of our country’s National Conservation Lands

  7. Conservation Values: Ecological + Scientific • 6 watersheds flowing out to National Marine Sanctuary: Molino, Agua Puera, San Vicente, Liddell, Yellow Bank and Laguna Creeks • Varied terrain: marine terraces, riparian canyons • Diverse vegetation: grasslands, redwood forests, oak woodlands • Rare and special-status fish and wildlife species: includes Coho salmon (State endangered), Steelhead (Federally threatened), American peregrine falcon (State endangered), California red-legged frog (Federally threatened)

  8. Conservation Values: Cultural + Historical • Native Americans known as the Cotoni (pronounced “Cho -toni ”) inhabited the area dating back thousands of years • Property has 4 registered ancestral Native American archeological sites, with more likely to be found • A century of active dairy operations • History of active community engagement has protected the land from development and resource extraction • Conservation of cultural and historic resources is a key principle of the Antiquities Act www.cotonicoastdairies.org

  11. BLM’s National Conservation Lands • BLM lands designated as national monuments are elevated into a special class of properties known as National Conservation Lands (NCLs) • Mission = conserve, protect and restore nationally significant landscapes that are recognized for their outstanding cultural, ecological & scientific values • NCLs enjoy one of the highest levels of federal protection, and are managed – by federal mandate – for conservation above all else www.cotonicoastdairies.org
