Drummondville Site History

Site acquired in 1997 Specific issues with operations Odour in the neighbourhood Leachate treatment to be improved Important challenges to building social acceptability No dialogue with the community at that time No information provided to the public News clipping were all about demonstrations, petitions, legal prosecution…

Development Planning

Environmental compliance is just not enough when developing

  • projects. The benefits for the community is a fundamental

consideration for building support. Our goal was to develop the best comprehensive project based on: Public expectations

Public participation through consultations More information and transparency

Public policies

Sustainable development Waste diversion Clean energy GHG emissions reduction…

Best practices at WM and throughout the industry

Environmental Benefits

Recovery of 37 million m3 of landfill gas A 32% reduction in energy consumption Avoids using 2 million litres of fuel oil Reduction of 15,000 tonnes CO2 eq = removing over 3,300 vehicles from the road

Economic Benefits

Investment of $25 million in Drummondville Creation of 50 jobs Growth of a Québec company A 50% increase in Serres Demers’production Presence in supermarkets 12 months of the year A 60% growth in sales

From Landfill to Community Facility

Sustainable remediation is not just about infrastructure, it is also about building trust with the community. Over the years, our property has become a large-scale laboratory where groups conduct experiments and research projects.

Conclusion

Drummondville site sustainable remediation was part of a long process; long-term strategic planning executed day after day by a dedicated team of employees since 1997. Site improvements involved engineering firm, scientists, high technologies, but especially a social dimension with the partnership/collaboration of the host community and its citizens. Drummondville Environmental and Energy Complex is a showcase for our company and recognized as a model.
