Phoenix Academy

➢ Accelerated program targeting overage and under-credited students who

are at-risk of dropping out of school.

➢ Key goal is to reengage, graduate and prepare students for post-secondary

learning opportunities.

➢ Phoenix serves 320 students (2/1/2019).

Phoenix Academy

  • Phoenix has graduated 918 students since the 2012 school year.

(as of January 2019)

  • Phoenix Academy earned PBIS Tier 1 Fidelity in 2018, applied for Tier II Fidelity

this year.

  • Phoenix Academy earned Middle States Accreditation starting December 1, 2014.
  • Since 2012, Phoenix Academy through partnership with 21st Century Grants runs

an Extended Day Program where students can earn additional credits for graduation.

  • All graduates complete a graduation portfolio that includes resume, cover letter, 3

applications to a college/post-secondary institution, 3 job applications, FAFSA and letters of recommendation.

Less than 4% of students enrolled will receive a suspension during the current school year. 2016-17: 5 suspensions (5 students; 2%) 2017-18: 9 suspensions (9 students; 3%)

  • 1 year of growth in Reading & Math for 90 days of enrollment
  • 2 years of growth in Reading & Math for 180 days of enrollment

OR Students will obtain a scaled score that is equivalent or higher to the mid-basic mark. (NEW) 2017-18: 2.3 year average growth in Reading* 2.1 year average growth in Math*

* Measured using the Reading Inventory and Math Inventory Assessments. As averages, this indicates that the majority of students met the goal.

State Standardized Testing Participation

Camelot of Buehrle

➢ Alternative Education for Disruptive Youth (AEDY) program tailored

to provide services to students in grades 6-12 who need a temporary placement due to serious behavioral infractions.

➢ All students are assigned through Administrative Review, Judiciary

Hearing or waiver process.

➢ Buehrle is designed to support improved decision making skills, keep

students on track for promotion, credit accumulation and SDOL graduation standards.

➢ Buehrle serves 47 students (1/1/2019).

  • Since 2009, 1,523 students have been served, 49 students graduated,

1,427 students have transitioned back to a traditional school.

  • Buehrle earned Middle States Accreditation (12/1/2015).
  • From January 2017 to June 2018, 118 students transitioned back to their

home school; only 7 returned to Buehrle (5.9% recidivism rate).

  • 2016-2017 State AEDY audit was passed with zero recommendations

Asked by PDE to be a pilot program for the new AEDY process.

  • Buehrle developed a partnership with Ross Elementary to read and assist

with a kindergarten class each year.

Findings

  • Mixed overall performance results on state measures (Keystone, PSSA).
  • Daily attendance and lower chronic absenteeism are consistently below the district average. Multiple

efforts are underway to address.

  • College and career efforts in instruction and activities have begun the process for better preparation
  • f students.
  • There is a need for more effective data on school climate and perceptions.

Next Steps

Camelot

  • Camelot at Buehrle and Phoenix will continue to work with the District to improve academic and

behavioral services for students who are at risk. The intended result is increased performance on state assessments, and decreased absenteeism.

  • The District will review data and continue monitoring student performance and behavioral support

with Camelot leadership.

  • A Student and staff survey will be conducted in spring of each year to gauge perceptions of efficacy and
  • climate. Action planning will include areas of need identified through these surveys.
  • The contract will be revised to reflect enhanced expectations for Camelot programs and staff, students

and their performance (academic, attendance, career and college readiness).

  • March 8, 2019: The Board of School Directors will receive the revised Camelot Contract which includes

services at Buehrle, the Futures Program and Phoenix.

  • March 19, 2019: The Board of School Directors will vote on contract. Contract term is July 1, 2019 - June

30, 2021.

  • December 2019: By December, Request for Proposal (RFP) will be developed and released.
  • Summer 2020: Proposals will be considered.
  • Fall 2020: Two year contract for 2021-2023 will be awarded.
