• To achieve systemic

impact, it was critical to partner directly with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS)

• Flinn Foundation and MDHHS has partnered on:

– “Opening Minds Ending Stigma” -- Saving Young Lives – Screening Kids in Primary Care(SKIPP) – Infant Mental Health – Home Visiting Evaluation – State Innovation Model

• State Innovation Model is a person-centered system that is

coordinating care across medical settings, as well as with community organizations to address social determinants of health, improve health outcomes; and pursue community- centered solutions to upstream factors of poor health

• utcomes.
• Flinn Foundation, in partnership with MDHHS, applied for a

grant on behalf of the state of Michigan to Grantmakers in Health (GIH). The grant was technical assistance to the state to further the work of SIM.

• Our partnership with MDHHS, Mental Health

Services to Children and their Families includes the following projects:

–Opening Minds Ending Stigma and Saving Young Lives –Integration of Children’s Mental Health in Primary Care (Screening Kids in Primary Care—SKIPP) –Infant Mental Health-Home Visiting Project

“Opening Minds Ending Stigma”

• In conjunction with National Mental Health Awareness Month (May 2016), the Ethel and

James Flinn Foundation and MDHHS teamed up to change the conversation with young people about mental illness as they launch the “Opening Minds Ending Stigma” statewide campaign.

• The special features Michigan leaders, mental health organizations, and people with mental

illness in a probing look at the issues and solutions in delivering care and ending the stigma associated with it.

“Opening Minds Ending Stigma” Saving Young Lives

• The statewide campaign of the Ethel and James Flinn Foundation and MDHHS, presents a

second mental health awareness broadcast in September in conjunction with National Suicide Prevention Month.

• Suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people, with statistics showing that

90% of those who take their own lives had a mental illness.

• Screening Kids in Primary Care

– Model included integrating screening of children for social

• emotional, mental health needs in the primary care setting

– Provided a Behavioral Health Clinician in the primary care setting to assist with assessment, providing brief intervention, referral and follow up – New code for reimbursing primary care for behavioral health screening (96127)

• Has served as a model for the integration of children’s

behavioral health in primary care in 40 counties in Michigan.

• Infant Mental Health – Home Visiting Project

– The evaluation of Infant Mental Health-Home Visiting (IMH-HV) in Michigan is undertaken to ensure the availability of state and federal funding for services to infants, toddlers and their families. – Development of a training model and fidelity tool for the sustainability of IMH-HV in Michigan

• The Foundation’s grant challenged us to seek funding

from the Gerstacker Foundation, Medicaid Match Funds, and an application to the Health Endowment Fund.
