The planned infrastructure upgrades for Kensington Avenue, Curtis Street and Hammarskjold Drive, adjacent to Burnaby North Secondary School, will help to move Burnaby toward that vision.   2. BURNABY NORTH STREET UPGRADE PROJECT SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE ROUTES The Burnaby School District is planning to replace Burnaby North Secondary School. To improve safety, accessibility and route connections for pedestrians and cyclists, the school district and the City are collaborating to upgrade Kensington Avenue, Curtis Street and Hammarskjold Drive, adjacent to the school. WHAT IS BEING UPGRADED? Improvements to streets adjacent to the school will include: New multi-use urban trail: Kensington Avenue, Curtis Street and Hammarskjold Drive, adjacent to the school New sidewalks: East side of Kensington Avenue and north side of Hammarskjold Drive Boulevards with trees: Along Kensington Avenue and Hammarskjold Drive, separating vehicles from pedestrians and cyclists Improved connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists: Linkage of the Frances-Union Bikeway to the Trans Canada Trail Improved safety: • Separating vehicles from pedestrians and cyclists • New Kensington/Union/Hammarskjold intersection, including closure of right turn lane (Kensington to Union) to improve cyclist and pedestrian safety and connectivity • Kensington/Curtis intersection safety improvements • Additional street and pedestrian lighting • On-street parking changes on Kensington Avenue and Hammarskjold Drive • Curb bulges CURTIS STREET E V I R D D L O J K S R A M M A H KENSINGTON AVENUE DUNNEDIN STREET CARNEGIE STREET CURTIS STREET UNION STREET STREET UPGRADE AREA ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT 604-294-7460 | engineering@burnaby.ca

  3. BURNABY NORTH STREET UPGRADE PROJECT HOW WILL THIS WORK AFFECT TRAFFIC AND RESIDENTS? During construction, there will be temporary lane closures, but traffjc will remain open in a single-lane alternating traffjc pattern during construction hours. Construction hours will be scheduled to avoid peak-traffjc times. Two-way traffjc will resume outside of daytime construction hours. Every efgort will be made to minimize disruption to residents, businesses and transit users during construction. Residents will be notifjed well in advance of any traffjc disruption or utility shutofgs.
