  27. Managing your learning during BST Aisling Smith, Education Specialist RCPI,

  28. Overview of Curriculum This curriculum outlines the educational content and expected achievements of the two-year Basic Specialist Training (BST) Programme . Key training policies, training goals, standards of professionalism and specific outcomes are detailed. • Trainees will be assessed in the workplace at intervals throughout the BST programme. • Assessments must be recorded in the BST online ePortfolio. • Trainees are required to attend an annual review in RCPI, at which their ePortfolio is reviewed and they are given the opportunity to provide feedback on their rotation. • The ePortfolio should be kept up to date throughout the year. The curriculum for BST outlines the core knowledge, skills and achievements that are required by the end of the BST Programme to achieve a BST certificate. There will be many opportunities within the programme for trainees to acquire additional knowledge and skills over and above the core content and trainees are encouraged to actively seek additional opportunities to learn. Curriculum

  29. Outcome Based Education (OBE) What does OBE involve? • OBE first defines the end goal, the final learning outcome, for a necessary workplace skill or task. • Criteria for measuring proficiency are determined, and the steps to achieve this are outlined. • There is a strong emphasis on trainees working with their trainer to set goals for their current post. These goals are based on the outcomes for the concurrent phase of training. • Trainee needs are front and centre in the design of the curriculum; what do they need to do in order to gain mastery of the task expected from them at the start of their next progression. Design begins with the end in mind. • OBE ensures our training programmes are in line with international best practice in medical education. • Constructive alignment is key; needs and learning are clearly integrated. Outcomes are only added if they are important and relevant for achieving proficiency in that specialty. • Professionalism and the development of core professional skills is integral to the Curriculum development of the OBE curriculum.
