  • 3. Procedure of the character assessment

The characteristics tested will be recorded on the assessment sheet and adjectivally described. The results recorded on the assessment sheet will be read out at the character assessment and then given to the owner as an inclusion with the pedigree. Successful participation in the assessment will be recorded on the pedigree and clearly marked with a stamp. The extracted information will be made available by head office via SV-DOxS.

  • The VDH requires its breed clubs to make current

behaviour spot checks

  • The character in its variety and breadth is an outstanding

quality feature of our German Shepherd dog

  • In the past, mental characteristics assigned to our breeding

animals were insufficiently recorded

  • Pressure placed on our breeders and breed clubs by the

general public is steadily rising

Why do we need a character assessment? W e s e n s b e u r t e i l u n g 2 1 7

  • 5. What do we/ breeders get out of the character assessment
slide-17
SLIDE 17

Actions and Guidelines

  • Dogs between the ages of 9 months to the completion of the

13th months will be assessed.

  • Entry fee per dog is €20.00.
  • Whilst the assessment is still voluntary, dogs that do not fit

within this age bracket will also be admitted.

  • Assessors will only ‚break off‘ a negative assessment if the dog

is gun shy or if the dog shows a high level of aggression or is extremely shy in a friendly situation.

  • In the event of a negative result, the character assessment can

be repeated once. The repeater dogs will be noted as such in the documentation as a note for the assessors.

The next step

After the unanimous decison of the SV-BV in May 2014 to introduce a SV-Character assessment, for the time being its implementation in May 2016 will be voluntary. At the SV-BV 2017, the manager of the Breed book will make an application that all SV bred GSDs with a litter date after 01.07.2017, must provide a character assessment as part of their breed accreditation.

slide-19
SLIDE 19

What does this mean? Definitions

  • In future we want to assist our breeders in their targeted

choice of breeding partner.

  • The more dogs of a breed are assessed and statistics are

documented, the more meaningful is the analysis of tendencies of behavioural problems.

  • By correctly describing the respective behaviours noted during

an assessment, the result is assigned the individual breed animal and is recorded in a comprehesible format.

  • In the long term such a breed-worth evaluation in respect to

mental characteristics will be possible.

SLIDE 20

What does this mean? Definitions

  • We do not wish to hinder breeding!!!
  • In the case of a dog that for compelling reasons has not passed

the character assessment within the required time frame, it is possible to do the characerer assessment regardless of age via special permission by the head office – (lateral entrant)

  • Similarly, dogs bred abroad or older obtained dogs can catch

up on the character assessment irrespective of age, can do so via special permission by the head office – (lateral entrant)

  • The time blockage of 5 months between the character

assessment and the ZAP must be adhered to.

  • Consequently we deem it neccessary that all our breeding

animals must consistently demonstrate a character assessment

The Character assessmet - Promotion

  • Generally, participation in the character assessment

must be promoted by breeder and the organisation .

  • Independent of later entry of dogs into the breeding

program, the breeder should already motivate his puppy buyers to participate in a character assessment.

  • Even for inexperienced dog handlers the character

assessment is easily doable and thus leads to a first, positive experience.

  • Therefor it is vital to engage with one’s four-

legged from an early age.

ZAP - Projection

The statements and requirements of the character assessment primarily serve to provide proof of environmentallyconfident and socially amicable dogs. However as a consultative tool they also serve as a complementary test for our working dog requirements. The character assessment encompasses the findings of the dog‘s behavioural characteristics that reveal themselves on the basis of inherited assets influenced by rearing- developmental- and keeping qualities.

As an attachment to the pedigree, the core team unanimously came to the conviction that the documentation similar to the adjectival description of character in the character assessment, should be used for the working part of ZAP.

This means: There will be no scoring. In the various sections, the dog‘s work will be adjectivally described.

This is where the manner (the ‚how‘) of the dog‘s work is recorded. The focus is not on „faster, higher, further“ but is on the dog‘s basic abilities in its interaction with its handler.

Only the rating passed/not passed is awarded in the various sections and in the overall assessment together with the appropriate TSB- rating. Nosework: How does the dog work, what is its technique, and how does the dog solve encountered problems during the track? Obedience: How does the dog work with his handler, what is his technique and his response to verbal commands, how does the dog retrieve and not least: how does the dog jump? Defense exercises: How does the dog hold and guard, how is his defense behaviour, how is his grip behaviour, and last but not least: how obedient is the dog? For an easy evaluation, the individual results of the ZAP will be recorded in the data bank as credit numbers PLEASE NOTE: The German ‚Bonitaetszahlen‘ translates as ‚credit number‘. I do not know what that means and neither does any translation service. I can only think that it is a specific and simple way of recording results.

ZAP – What is neccessary?

The Federal Assembly 2017 decides the introduction of the SV-ZAP 1. Susequently, the proposed working judges from the various state groups, who must also be character assessment judges, will be prepared by the core team. Included is a successfully passed basic seminar, a positive decision of the SV-Board and then 3 trainee judging roles to be done under the guidance of core team members. 2. Participation via the alternative route into the breed is optional for each dog handler up to the deadline (1.1.2018). 3. As a prerequisite, lateral entrants and all dogs from abroad who are to be included into the German breeding program, must from 1.7.2017 have proof of a ZAP. 4. In all cases, the prerequisite for entry into the ZAP is the Character assessment (CA). 5. From 1.7.2017, dogs that can prove a CA and a passed ZAP will have unrestricted entry into the breeding progam . 6. Without a verified breed survey, progeny will receive white papers.

ZAP – OUTLOOK: WHO ASSESSES THE PERFORMANCE OF THE ZAP The state clubs can notify the head office of interested persons wishing to be trained for the performance element. Only applicants who are also trial judges and who have the character test qualification, may, after the trial period, be registered as assessors of the working element. Training comprises one basic seminar with both theory and a practical component followed by 2 similar exercises with members of the core team. Coordination of the training will be steered by the head office. The candidate submits to the judges‘ rules version currently in force. The final appointment/dismissal decision is made via SV-management. Renewal of the appointment is done yearly on instruction of SV-management via its head office. ZAP – Outlook: Who delivers the ZAP to us/ the breeder?

The breeder is offered an alternative entry into breeding. Via ZAP the organisation has the ability to gather a dog‘s assigned working capacities in a databank. As the dogs are subject to standardised testing and results are correspondingly entered into a data bank e.g. DOxS and are retrievable, the breeder‘s choice of breeding animals according to characteristics is simplified .

  • ZAP comprises three elements
  • The timber dumbell is to be thrown, a side step is allowed
  • A dog which does not retrieve or who does not jump cannot pass the

  • In case of negative result, ZAP can be repeated twice. Repeating dogs

will be noted as such in the assessment‘s documentation.
