Introduction - What is Breathing Space?

It’s a scheme offering formal protection for individuals who have problem debt, backed by government

  • legislation. It means:
  • A 60 day period of protection for individuals
  • Longer protection for individuals in mental health crisis treatment
  • Creditors must pause enforcement action
  • Creditor contact relating to repayment of debt must stop
  • Interest and default fees & charges are frozen
  • Protections dependent on the individual continuing to engage

with debt advice

Money Adviser

  • Gather information from the individual

  • Escalate continued non-compliance by

advisers will use to submit applications

  • Issue notifications when Breathing Space

starts and finishes
