BPS Theory of Action: High School Transformation

Theory of Action If the Boston Public Schools creates conditions enabling schools to implement robust academics and work-based learning, and If schools establish a strong school culture, systems and structures enabling educators to:

  • Co-create engaging project-based learning experiences centered around

cognitively-demanding tasks that are culturally and linguistically sustaining and integrated with career pathways;

  • Work together to provide students with personalized supports; and
  • Routinely reflect on how their practice is impacting student learning...

Then students will experience authentic learning that connects academics to the world of work, persist to overcome challenges, and move on ready to succeed in college, careers, and life.

Turnaround Practice 1: Leadership, Shared Responsibility and Professional Collaboration

Strategy 1: Create structures that embed professional collaboration in the school. Strategy 2: Develop distributed leadership roles that allow for collective ownership of the school’s turnaround. Strategy 3: Incorporate workplace-based adult learning experiences that allow staff to build and integrate pathway-specific knowledge and skills. Strategy 4: Build a staff schedule that incorporates professional collaboration and professional learning opportunities across the school. Strategy 5: Collaborate with other Linked Learning schools across the county.

Strategy 2: Develop and implement a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to promote students’ academic, pathway, and social emotional learning. Strategy 3: Provide comprehensive guidance and skills-building to ensure that students’ high school experiences prepare them for postsecondary college and career options. Strategy 4: Create an advisory structure to coordinate supports across the school, and prepare students for college and career success. Strategy 5: Develop and implement a comprehensive support system that allows ELLs to successfully access and participate in academic and pathway related opportunities.
