slide-8
SLIDE 8

To formulate a long-term facilities plan that maximizes the opportunities to provide a quality education for all Decatur students, optimizing the effectiveness of the District's educational facilities. The facilities plan will need to develop recommendations addressing long-term planning needs as well as urgent, short-term planning needs. To accomplish this goal, the Facilities Planning Team has the following goals for its work:

  • Develop recommendations for the following "Immediate Decisions - Continued Planning" issues

Identify the most effective use of the SDMS facility Identify the optimal facility solution to house the John's Hill program Identify the optimal facility solution to house the Montessori program Identify the optimal facility solution for the Social Emotional Alternative Program and MPSED offices Identify the optimal facility solution(s) for expanding Pre-K Programs in the district

  • Develop and explore competing scenarios for the future of the district's Middle School Facilities
  • Explore potential high performing programs (Montessori, Fine Arts, IB, PYP) to offer the best educational alternative to

students residing within the school district boundary

  • Adopt a process to engage the community, uncovering community aspirations for the future of the school district's

facilities, and develop a plan that is built upon community input

slide-9
SLIDE 9

Community Engagement

  • Built from the ground up
  • “Put your board member hat on”
  • Discovery is more powerful than

persuasion

  • Uncovers community aspirations
slide-10
SLIDE 10

Meeting Format

  • Everyone has a chance to contribute
  • Works to build consensus
  • Works to build shared ownership or

a common understanding

What Research Tells Us

  • Nothing obvious, given how many variables exist
  • Possible Pre-High School configurations

✴ Elementary K-5 (6) ✴ Middle (6) 7-8 ✴ “Elemiddle” K-8

slide-15
SLIDE 15

What Research Tells Us

  • K-8 growth is up 35% nationally from 2000 to 2012
  • Vast majority of MS students in K-8 schools perform better academically and

behaviorally than those in MS or JH schools

✴ Higher Mathematics and Reading scores, GPAs, and completed credits ✴ Less likely to be tardy, absent, disciplined or suspended

  • Better self-esteem and positive self-perception than peers in traditional MS
slide-16
SLIDE 16

What Research Tells Us

  • Research is less conclusive about why

✴ Possibly due to stability of environment ✴ Students undergo a difficult transition at precisely the time they may need increased

attention to social and academic needs

  • Simply reconfiguring grades is not sufficient to improve student outcomes; K-8

schools must implement proven middle-level best practices

✴ Student-centered focus ✴ Properly prepared teachers ✴ Developmentally responsive, comprehensive guidance and counseling program

members

  • Open and honest communication
  • Report out to whole by table
slide-19
SLIDE 19

Small-Group Work

  • For our existing configurations (K-6, 7-8, K-8), identify

strengths and challenges to maintain

  • For the Elemiddle configurations (K-8, K-4 & 5-8), identify

strengths and challenges to implement

What is our optimal configuration for schools serving Pre-HS students?
