  1. Band and Orchestra at Glebe Elementary School Elizabeth Schultz: elizabeth.schultz@apsva.us @MsSchultzMusic

  2. Is it too late to register? – NO!!!! – Register here: https://goo.gl/Zb60Hz – Registration will close by the end of September.

  3. How to get in touch with me… – I am at 3 schools! If you need me email is ALWAYS the best way to reach me. Please put Glebe Elementary School somewhere in your email to me. – A lot of information is on the Glebe Instrumental Website: https://glebe.apsva.us/programs-services/instrumental-home/ – There is a calendar on that website that already has our concert dates for the school year!

  4. CONCERT DATES!! – Thursday, Feb. 9 th at 7 pm – Wednesday, May 31 st at 7 pm There will also be a daytime concert for this performance sometime during the – school day. We will have a final performance for the 3 rd graders sometime in the last few weeks of school.

  5. Where to rent an instrument – Foxes Music: www.foxesmusic.com – Washington Music Center (Chuck Levin’s): www.chucklevins.com – Music & Arts: www.musicarts.com (I recommend Foxes, but feel free to use whichever of these companies you would like.)

  6. Why you should rent an instrument. – Students all make care and maintenance mistakes when first learning to plan an instrument…rental instruments come with the ability to send your instrument for repairs. If the instrument suddenly breaks – you are able to return it for a new one. – Purchased instruments don’t come with this option J – PLEASE DO NOT BUY AN INSTRUMENT OFF AMAZON OR THROUGH A STORE THAT IS NOT A MUSIC STORE!!!!!!!!!!!! Trust me, you’ll thank me later!! –

  7. When should I have an instrument? – Students should have instruments with them in class starting next week. – Rental instruments (a few) are available through Glebe. These instruments are meant for students enrolled in the free/reduced lunch program. Rental contracts are available from me if you need one. There are also downloadable forms in English and Spanish available online. (Instrumental Home à Important Forms) – The sooner contracts and money are turned in the sooner your student will be able to take their instrument home.

  8. Successful instrumental music students do the following... – Show up to as many classes as they are able to. – Practice at home for about 5-10 minutes 5-6 days a week. – Have goals for each practice session. – Ask for help when they need it!!!! – Realize that this will become fun – but sometimes it can be difficult and lots of hard work. – Learning an instrument is like learning a new language – the more often you can use it the better you will become.

  9. Students will be more successful at learning an instrument if… – Parents, peers, and siblings are supportive of their learning. – Parents and siblings are patient with beginning instrument sounds. (It won’t always sound *great*, but eventually it will...I promise!!!) – They see this as a long-term investment of their time. Students who only want to play for a year will wind up not being as successful at the end of a year as a student who sees themselves playing in high school or beyond! – This is a great opportunity that we have in Arlington. I didn’t get to start learning an instrument until 6 th grade. But because I don’t see students everyday it is up to them to keep the momentum going between lessons.

  10. How to practice Students should be practicing for about 1 hour each week. This sounds like a lot, – but it is really only 5-10 minutes a day. Practice as often as you can! This is a skill that is improved over time. Nobody picks – up the cello and become Yo Yo Ma …he had to start with Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star too. (And his parents probably hated hearing it over and over again J ) Choose a quiet space with as few distractions as possible. – If motivation is an issue try practicing in front of the TV. Have your student practice – during all of the commercials. You’d be surprised at how much practicing can get done in a single 30 minute television show! Schedule the time. When it’s already on your calendar its kind of hard to ignore! –

  11. What should my student be practicing? Check the Glebe instrumental website for specific homework. – 1. Always start with a warm-up (breathing, bow exercises, easy pieces) 2. Move to a review of something on the homework list (yesterday’s something new!) 3. Go to something new 4. End with something familiar or fun This order will allow your student to have a successful practice session every time. Adding – something familiar or fun will allow students to end on something they enjoy. **Ending on something they struggled with will make them less likely to want to practice later!!!**

  12. How to practice something new Set REALISTIC expectations. Don’t try to play the entire piece, but rather 2 measures. – I.E.: Get 3 notes learned. Be more successful with bowing between 2 strings. **This is – similar to expecting yourself to finish a 500 page book in 2 hours. It’s just not possible unless you’re Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory . Set a realistic goal-if you meet it, find a new goal to add on! Steps for successful practicing: 1. Choose a 1-2 measure chunk 2. Figure out the rhythm 3. Figure our the notes 4. Say the notes in time 5. Add your fingers in time 6. Try to play the chunk

  14. Additional info about the schedule – I tried my best to not pull students from subjects that have a SOL test at the end of the year. – If you have any concerns with your student’s class see me after this meeting. – There are so many students spread out throughout classes that I was unable to schedule all classes for during specials.

  15. Upcoming opportunity for students Yorktown’s marching band has welcomed us to be a part of their organization! This is a great group of students and there were some Glebe students that participated last year! This is a great opportunity!! Check out the YHS band’s website for more information about how to register!

  16. Questions? – If you want to see which section (instrument) your student is in please see me after! – If you want to see if your student has been registered please see me after as well! – I know we all have places to be, so have a great night!!
