ABOUT MISS BATES ❑ My 11 th year in East Brunswick- 3rd year at HMS- previously at Memorial and Chittick Elementary Schools ❑ Education ❑ Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and Psychology ❑ Master’s degree in Educational Administration ❑ My Mission: ❑ I am very excited to be teaching sixth grade again this year. My goal is to create a challenging learning environment where students will feel comfortable enough to take academic risks. I will work with students to help them gain better organizational skills and a greater sense of responsibility and independence.

  6. Writing Workshop Middle School students will be asked to: • Generate ideas - Notebook work (free writing/planning) vs. loose leaf writing vs. typing • Rehearse their writing • Draft/revise original pieces of writing • Revise and edit their work as they finish pieces

  7. Reading Workshop Middle School students will be asked to: Choose an independent book to read in school and at • home Listen to the teacher Read Aloud (absolutely essential!) • Participate in Book Clubs • Write about their reading approximately 10% of the time • Remember that readers should not be restricted to reading levels! Interest, background knowledge, and teacher support all make a difference.

  8. READING WORK • Students will have reading homework 4 nights a week. They may choose the nights that work best for them (including weekends) but be sure to spend a minimum of 20 minutes per night. During that Reading Work time, they could be working on any of the following: • independent reading • maintenance of the Reading Log • a quick jot entry • a Write Long • their Words & Language section **Additional reading homework may be assigned in other subject areas.**

  9. Assessments Students are assessed to help the teacher determine instructional priorities for each student using: • Running records including their fluency rate • Writing On-Demand pieces • Writing E-portfolio • Spelling inventory for word study

  10. Running Records These are completed at teacher’s discretion; they are inputted every marking period, but do not need to be done again for each student per marking period. Available: • Fountas & Pinnell running records (short books) • Teachers College running records (excerpts from packet)

  11. “On Demand” Writing Assessments MP 1 MP 2 MP 3 MP 4 Narrative Pre Informational Post Argumentative Post Narrative Post Informational Pre Argumentative Pre Narrative Post

  12. Other Formative Assessments • In-progress drafts • Bend “checkpoints”: Students show an example of using an essential skill of the unit with a shared text or their independent book • Unit check-in & check-out assessments

  13. GRADING POLICY ❑ Reading = 40% ❑ Writing = 40% ❑ Word Work = 10% ❑ Homework = 10% ➢ Larger assignments that are late will lose partial credit. ➢ Homework is accepted one day late for half credit. After that, it is a zero. The exception to this rule is grammar sheets- those are a zero if they are not complete because we go over them in class. ➢ A student has 2 days for every day he/she is absent to make up work. It is the student’s responsibility to show the teacher made up work. Otherwise the work will receive a zero. ➢ Class Buddies ➢ Handout Folders ➢ Parent Access

  16. PARENT INVOLVEMENT ** Research shows that students with parents who are involved in their children's education achieve more. Below are a few things you can do with your children on a daily basis that will make a difference in their education: ~Monitor your child’s agenda ~Frequently check Parent Access and discuss your child’s grades with him/her ~Look through your child’s notebooks and ask them questions about their learning. ~Watch them do their Reading Work each night and discuss what they worked on. Ask to read their writing about reading. ~Help organize your child’s materials ~Encourage your child to develop a reading and writing habit. ~Model independent reading. Children learn from watching models. If they see you read instead of watching television or surfing the web, they are more likely to pick up a book during their free time. ~Read to your with your child frequently. ~Read your child’s published writing piece, but please DO NO CORRECT or CHANGE them. ~Make frequent trips to the library. ~Provide your children with a quiet homework space as well as appropriate reading and writing materials.

  17. THANK YOU!! for getting involved in your child’s learning! Your involvement is crucial to your child’s success, and I look forward to working with you this year.
