TECHNOLOGY

TOROIDAL ISOLATION

  • 2. Noise Attenuation - NBT
  • Narrow Bandwidth Technology (NBT) uses the toroid

as a low pass filter.

  • Attenuation from 2kHz to 1MHz at 12dB/decade up to

500kHz.

  • Torus Power does not use passive current-limiting

filter banks to achieve attenuation.

  • 3. High Instantaneous Current Capability
  • Torus Power can supply high levels of instantaneous
  • power. This is achieved through an optimally

designed transformer which is capable of providing clean and least obstructed power flow.

  • Dynamic loads like amplifiers perform better when

they don’t have to struggle to get sufficient power from the wall.

  • 6. Ethernet Monitoring & Control
  • Electrical parameters (Voltage In/Out & Current

Draw) may be monitored on the Torus Power, or via any web browser on the local network.

  • Email Fault Notification in the event of system fault
  • Switch-On Safety Delay
  • Power cycling (on/off) via web browser interface (all
  • utlets for AVR, individual zones for AVR2)
  • Scheduler and Sequencer
  • Auto Reboot when internet is lost
  • 5. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)
  • Maintains system voltage at 120V +/-5V with

incoming voltage from 85V to 135V.

  • Start-up Delay as an additional safety feature to

protect against extreme voltage conditions.

  • Programmable automatic shut-off during extreme

voltage.

  • 4. Series Mode Surge Suppression (SMSS)
  • Meets IEEE C62.41 1991 (6000V, 3000A, 1000 times)
  • Torus Power SMSS absorbs the surge in the toroid

and slowly bleeds it to the loads, preventing ground contamination.

  • Torus Power SMSS does not shunt surges to ground

like MOVs.

  • SMSS uses all non-sacrificial components (does not

require replacement or repair after large surges )

  • 1. True Isolation
  • Torus Power provides true isolation from the external

power grid via Plitron toroidal isolation transformer.

TECHNOLOGY

Individual Zone Control

  • Individually addressable outlet zones :
  • 4 zones for 15A and 20A models
  • 7 zones for 45A, 60A, 75A & 90A models
  • Available in AVR2 models

Auto Reboot

  • Outlet will automatically reboot if Torus Power

detects a loss of internet connection.

  • Designed to reboot the modem and/or router to

regain connection

  • Available in AVR2 models

Scheduler & Sequencer

  • Scheduler: Each zone may be programmed with 6 on
  • r off events per day, seven days per week.
  • Power-up sequencing with selectable delay times

between zones.

  • Scheduler remains active even when internet

connection is lost, so long as unit is powered.

  • Sequencing available via Scheduler as well
  • Available in AVR2 models

Switch-On Safety Delay

  • When power is restored or turned on, Torus power

waits 5 seconds prior to engaging the circuit to ensure safe line conditions.

  • Available in AVR & AVR2 models

Email Fault Notification

  • Notification Email in event of extreme voltage
  • High Voltage is >135V for products with single phase

(120V) input, and > 270V for products with dual phase (2 x 120V, or 240V) input.

  • Low voltage is defined as <85V for products with

single phase (120V) input, and <170V for products with dual phase (2x120V, or 240V) input.

  • Available in AVR & AVR2 models

UNDERSTANDING POWER

APPENDIX A1: Incoming Power

Source: http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/energy/power.htm

Incoming Power:

 High levels of noise due to voltage shaping (inverters & converters) and the growing number

  • f noise-generating household devices (dimmers,

non-linear power supplies, non-linear loads).  The effects of power line impedance become greater as the distance to the load increases. This can result in loss of power.  Inconsistent voltage levels (Sags, Brownouts, Surges and Spikes)

“Keeping voltage distortion, current harmonics, normal mode noise and common mode noise to a minimum in a power distribution system is absolutely necessary for reliable operation.”

  • Arthur Kelm, Ground One

APPENDIX A2: Incoming Power

25

Low Voltage / Brownout High Voltage Noise*:

Common Mode / Differential Mode

Voltage Spikes/Transients Voltage Sag High Impedance:

Voltage Drops as Distance Increases

Clean Voltage Sine Wave

This pure 120V sine wave is required for every audio video system, especially high fidelity systems that are more discriminating.

*Motors and switching power supplies are the primary culprits for noise. Common Mode Noise is noise between the neutral and ground, Differential Mode Noise is noise between the neutral and line.

THINKING ABOUT POWER IN A DIFFERENT WAY

APPENDIX A3: MANAGING INCOMING POWER “For years sensitive electronics have been segregated from other equipment in the recording and post production environment. When engineering a new system all loads should be divided into categories and isolated from one another.”

  • Arthur Kelm, Ground One

Work Includes: Chief Engineer at Skywalker Sound, Technical Consultant to Walt Disney Imagineering, General Manager & Technician at Record One Studios

Motor loads are frequently associated with the negative effects

  • f voltage spikes & dips

when motors start up (example: HVAC systems). Motor Loads These loads are generally not a problem with the exception of florescent light ballasts and SCR dimmer circuits. Lighting & Convenience Loads These are the most critical loads that must isolated, protected and conditioned! Audio Video systems are a perfect example. Sensitive Electronic Loads
