What we will be doing today

  • Reviewing attendance boundaries
  • Getting feedback on some scenarios
  • Hearing your thoughts/reactions/suggestions

What are attendance boundaries?

  • Determine your “home” school based
  • n where you live
  • Students are guaranteed space in

their home school

  • Transportation is provided to your

home school (if you live outside the walk area)

Why change attendance boundaries

  • With two fewer elementary schools & one

fewer middle school, it’s needed

  • It’s been more than 20 years since

boundaries were last changed

Goals & requirements for new boundaries

  • Create better racial & economic equity

among our schools

○ Each school gets resources it needs ○ Better results for students

  • State requires that we don’t create inequity

(racially isolated)

  • Address capacity issues
  • Be more efficient so we can spend money on

better programs

Other considerations

  • Monitor the number of students affected
  • Keep designated areas together as possible
  • Consider impact on transportation
  • Each elementary with capacity for

pre-kindergarten

What we won’t be doing today

  • Deciding on variances
  • What is a variance?

○ When a student attends a school other than their “home” school. Right now, parents put in a request & if there is space, they can attend the school of their choice. Generally, no transportation is provided. ○ Magnet schools = variance

More on variances

  • Will decide after attendance boundaries are

decided

  • Why? Remember - we have to show that we

are not causing more racial and economic segregation

  • Board guidance on handling variances (current

and future) after boundaries are set

Attendance Boundary Scenarios

  • All options are based on student addresses
  • AGAIN - WE MUST NOT CREATE RACIALLY

ISOLATED SCHOOLS

  • Focus on elementary boundaries because

middle boundaries=feeder schools

  • Presenting two elementary scenarios
  • Both are viable - meet our goals, no major

increase in transportation
