• ASKAP ¡(BETA) ¡commissioning ¡has ¡entered ¡a ¡phase ¡of ¡thorough ¡study ¡of ¡

syntheMc ¡beams, ¡and ¡how ¡to ¡improve ¡the ¡calibraMon ¡of ¡mosaics ¡(total ¡intensity, ¡ and ¡polarimetric). ¡The ¡PAF ¡and ¡ability ¡to ¡form ¡syntheMc ¡beams ¡disMnguishes ¡ ASKAP ¡from ¡all ¡other ¡telescopes, ¡to ¡it ¡is ¡no ¡surprise ¡that ¡this ¡has ¡become ¡a ¡ major ¡focus, ¡and ¡will ¡remain ¡so ¡for ¡some ¡Mme ¡to ¡come. ¡

• Enormous ¡progress ¡has ¡been ¡made ¡in ¡the ¡measurement ¡of ¡beams, ¡and ¡their ¡

actual ¡posiMons ¡and ¡shapes ¡relaMve ¡to ¡that ¡expected. ¡

• The ¡calibraMon ¡of ¡conMnuum ¡mosaic ¡data ¡has ¡also ¡advanced ¡well, ¡and ¡will ¡

benefit ¡from ¡the ¡new ¡beam-­‑posiMon ¡informaMon. ¡A ¡new ¡1000 ¡sq ¡deg ¡survey ¡ begun ¡last ¡week ¡will ¡be ¡a ¡test ¡for ¡the ¡new ¡abiliMes. ¡

• Polarimetry ¡at ¡beam ¡centres ¡is ¡good ¡(low ¡leakage, ¡and ¡stable); ¡widefield ¡

polarimetry ¡is ¡currently ¡limited ¡by ¡somewhat ¡irregular ¡beam ¡shapes. ¡We ¡expect ¡ ASKAP ¡to ¡perform ¡well ¡polarimetrically. ¡

• Aperture ¡efficiencies ¡at ¡1.4 ¡GHz ¡are ¡esMmated ¡to ¡lie ¡in ¡the ¡range ¡71 ¡– ¡76% ¡ ¡
