WHAT DO WE NEED TO LEARN ABOUT IN Y3?
We Are Learning To
- identify sources of light
- identify reflectors of light
SLIDE 4
WHAT IS LIGHT? Light is a form of energy that travels in a wave from a light source. Objects that give off light are called sources
- f light or can be described as being luminous. If an
- bject is luminous, the light energy moves outwards from
the object, in straight lines.

THESE OBJECTS ARE SOURCES OF LIGHT. THEY ARE LUMINOUS.

THE MOON
.
- The Moon looks as if it is a light source but it is not.
- The Moon reflects the light from the sun at night.
SLIDE 10
PLANETS AND MOONS DO NOT MAKE THEIR OWN
- LIGHT. THEY ARE NOT LUMINOUS SO THEY ARE NOT
SOURCES OF LIGHT. THEY ARE REFLECTORS OF LIGHT.
SLIDE 11
NOW CUT OUT THE PICTURES AND SORT THEM INTO 2 GROUPS; ONE GROUP THAT ARE LIGHT SOURCES, EMITTING THEIR OWN LIGHT AND ONE GROUP THAT ARE NOT LIGHT SOURCES.
SLIDE 12
HERE ARE THE SOURCES OF LIGHT. DID YOU IDENTIFY ALL 11 OF THEM?
SLIDE 13
THESE OBJECTS MAY HAVE BEEN TRICKY FOR YOU.
A television screen emits light and is luminous when it is switched on! We use many screens – e.g. phones, tablets, computers - and they are all sources of light.
- The camera uses light
to make a photograph. It is not a light but it may have a flash light to use when there is poor natural light.
- A window is made of
glass and this is transparent so it will allow light to pass through it.
