Lifting operations Section 7: Site rules – Health information
Lifting equipment is controlled by the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) and should be checked as follows:
- Competent user must visually check before each use and record
weekly any defects,
- External inspection carried out 6 monthly for equipment used for
lifting people and accessories such as chains and hooks and records maintained.
- Lifting Equipment e.g. cranes, HIAB, JCB , davits and beams
including confined space equipment are subject to annual inspections and records maintained. For lifting operations to be carried out safely the wok must be planned, organised and carried out by authorised person.

An excavator must not be used to carry out a vertical lifting operation unless it has a designated lifting point and is marked to indicate a safe working load, along with an in date LOLER lifting certificate cover the lifting point. These excavators should b subject to an annual thorough examination in accordance with LOLER REMEMBER NO LIFT PLAN = NO LIFT

Confined spaces Section 7: Site rules – Health information
A confined spaces can be any space of an enclosed nature where there is a risk of death or serious injury from hazardous substance or dangerous conditions (e.g. lack of oxygen). Remember: Entry into a confined space should only be as a lost resort. Look at alternative ways of doing to job. For Inspection, sampling and cleaning operations can often be done from outside the space using appropriate equipment and tools.

Working at Heights Section 7: Site rules – Health information
Avoid working at height if possible, for example pre-assessment structures on the ground or extendible equipment. Prevent working at height, assess the risk and consider the following control measures to prevent falls for example:
- Use access towers, MEWPs if trained
- Guardrails and toe boards (where appropriate)
- Only use ladders for access and short duration, low risk work
- Prevention should include the possibility of falling into a excavation
- r trench.

Working at Heights Section 7: Site rules – Health information
Minimise the potential for a fall to occur – for example:
- Use fencing and guardrails
- Consider personal fall arrest equipment but only as a
last resort
- Risk Assessments provide information that will allow
you to select the most suitable equipment i.e. that which provides the maximum level of protection without limiting mobility
- Consider others people in the vicinity of the works;
prevent equipment from falling
- Where practical ensure an exclusion zone is set up
to prevent unauthorised access When working below others who are working at height Always wear your hard hat
