  2. Construc)on standards Do you know whether you are drilling into the Great Artesian Basin? • GAB sub-artesian bores must also comply with minimum standards for • water bores into sediments of the artesian basin. Drillers must no>fy the department before commencing construc>ng a GAB • bore at least one to five business days beforehand. GAB bores need to be cement grouted from the boAom upwards, from no • more than 30 metres above the produc>on zone (slots/screen) to the surface. Drillers must report on all bore drilling and cemen>ng within 60 business • days of commencing the works/bore. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  3. Construc)on standards We develop and enforce the construc>on standards to: • Help protect the resource: • Oakey PFAS contamina>on • CSG and petroleum ac>vi>es • Help ensure landholders have safe and secure long-term supplies: • Impact assessment between en>tlements • Help ensure impacts are avoided on environmental assets • Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  4. GAB forma>on Cemen>ng required from no more than 30m above the produc>on zone to the surface. Produc>on zone is 66m to 108m, thus needs grout at least 36m. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  5. GAB from 36m below ground level. Produc>on zone between 90–110m. Cemen>ng required at least 60m. Cemen>ng required from no more than 30m above the produc>on zone to the surface (in this circumstance, zone is 90 to 110m). Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  6. Example: Driller’s cemen>ng report to be supplied to department within 60 business days. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  7. Drillers licencing Class 1 • Permits work in non-flowing (subartesian) single aquifer systems. • Authorises the holder to drill a subartesian bore in a formation that contains the aquifer closest to the land surface. • Not allowed to drill through the upper aquifer formation to tap deeper formations. Class 2 • In addition to class 1 - permits work in non-flowing (subartesian) multiple aquifer systems. • Allowed to drill through the upper aquifer formation to tap deeper subartesian formations. Class 3 • In addition to class 2 - permits bore drilling in flowing (artesian) aquifer systems. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  8. Example of class 1 driller intersec)ng two aquifers: Bore has intersected basalt and then progressed down to sandstone. Appears to be slo[ng both basalt and sandstone. Class 1 Driller N.B. Drillers who drill into an aquifer system for which they are not licenced (for example, a class 1 driller who intersects two aquifers or artesian) must contact the department as soon as it is prac>cal to do so for instruc>ons on how to proceed by either construc>ng the bore or decommissioning the hole. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  9. Compliance and audi)ng • Departmental officers audit each and every drill log that is received • Records are maintained of non-compliance • Basic issues are usually discussed with the driller via phone or leAer • Serious breaches are referred to Bruce Keogh and are also entered into the departments compliance database – examples: • Drilling holes with wrong class of driller • Failure to cement bores • Issues that will poten>ally cause damage to the resource • Con>nual non-compliance • Compliance is performed to ensure: • Resource is protected • Landholders have safe and secure water supply Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  10. How the informa)on you give us…helps you… DNRM receive drill log from driller Drill log data validated, audited and entered into GWDB and QLD Globe When you ask DNRM about the where, what, when, how etc of drilling a bore, previous drill log informa>on is one of the key sources of informa>on we use. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  11. Strange things we come across … If you are going to use non-geological descrip>ve terms, please detail on the back of the drill log what you really mean… Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  12. The department requires accurate location of the bore sites … Actual property descrip>on GPS coordinates place bore on different property Issues include: Lot plan not matching GPS loca>on • GPS coordinates back to front • GPS coordinates jumbled • GPS in wrong datum • If you need assistance to set up your GPS, please contact the department and we will be more than happy to assist. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  13. Conversion of petroleum wells to water bores • Ex-petroleum wells cannot be converted to water bores unless: • You have spoken with departmental groundwater officers • the converted well will meet water bore construc>on/ recondi>oning standards. • You must no>fy DNRM before you start conver>ng a well to a water bore and ager you have finished the conversion. • You also need to no>fy the department and provide a report if you decommission or abandon the bore. • CSG wells drilled ager 1 January 2012 are more likely to comply with water bore standards as they have been constructed to the Code of Prac>ce for CSG wells in Qld. • The ownership of the well should be established by contac>ng DNRM before any conversion/recondi>oning is undertaken. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  14. Are you aware? • Limita>ons on drilling bores for stock and domes>c purposes within areas able to access town water – • Extent of the Qld Murray Darling Basin • Applies to all aquifers except Great Artesian Basin aquifers • Groundwater contamina>on in Oakey Creek Alluvium, no restric>on on drilling a bore, however need to be aware of implica>ons for clients and ensure strict compliance with construc>on standards to prevent any interconnec>vity of aquifers while drilling and once constructed. • Can replace a bore without need for development permit, providing you meet requirements of self-assessable code for replacement bores. • GAB Water Plan currently being revised and new version due out Sept 2017. Department of Natural Resources and Mines

  15. Informa)on sources • Minimum Construc>on Standards for Water Bores in Australia • Minimum Standards for the construc>on and recondi>oning of water bores that intersect the sediments of artesian basins in Queensland • Queensland Globe - hAps://www.business.qld.gov.au/running-business/support-assistance/ mapping-data-imagery/maps/queensland-globe/about • Maps of the extent of various groundwater resources • Can I drill a bore flow chart • You can talk to departmental officers across the region who have local groundwater knowledge • Bruce Keogh and Blake Topp – discuss construc>on issues and drillers licensing Department of Natural Resources and Mines
