HISTORY OF BSA YOUTH “TRAIN-THE-TRAINER” PROGRAMS

1952

National Junior Leader Instructor Training Camp

National Junior Leader Instructor Training Camps were held at Schiff Scout Reservation, New Jersey, and at Philmont Scout Ranch, New Mexico, created to develop a corps of youth to conduct training events in their local councils.

1973

National Troop Leader Development Camp

National Troop Leader Development Camps was the new name for the programs at Schiff and Philmont reflecting the adoption

the leadership competency based program.

1986

National Junior Leader Instructor Camp

National Junior Leader Instructor Camp occurs as an

  • ffering of the Philmont Training Center to resume the

Train the Trainer program which had been discontinued for over a decade.

2006

Youth Staff Development Course

The first Northeast Region Youth Staff Development Course (YSDC) occurs at Yards Creek Scout Reservation in New Jersey.

2012

NYLT Leadership Academy

YSDC becomes a national course called the NYLT Leadership Academy and moves to a camp outside of Washington, DC.

2015

A Leadership Academy course is added outside of

2016

Los Angeles, CA

A Leadership Academy course is added outside

The NYLT Leadership Academy train NYLT youth staff to be world-class presenters, evaluators, and leaders of their home council’s NYLT courses. Those who attend the Leadership Academy will hone their presentation and evaluation skills, meet successful leaders, participate in problem solving panels, learn best practices, and so much more!

It is the mission of the NYLT Leadership Academy to provide each council with the opportunity to participate in an effective, world class youth leadership training program.

The NYLT Leadership Academy Scholarship has been designed to encourage all local councils to send the future youth leadership of their NYLT course to the NYLT Leadership Academy. Each local council is eligible each year for one of the scholarships above. The scholarship covers the registration cost for the NYLT Leadership Academy and the local council is responsible for all transportation costs.

DID YOUR COUNCIL SEND YOUTH TO THE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY LAST YEAR? SEND FOUR YOUTH, AND THE FOURTH WILL RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP. SEND TWO YOUTH, AND THE SECOND WILL RECEIVE A SCHOLARSHIP.
