Effects of Learning Loss

7

Preliminary estimates suggest impacts may be larger in math than in reading and that students may return in fall 2020 with less than 50% of typical learning gains and, in some grades, nearly a full year behind what we would expect in this subject in normal conditions.

Addressing Lost Instructional Time

9 ▰ Academics combined a list of all standards students did not receive during the 2019-2020 SY as a result of school closures due to COVID-19. ▰ For the 2020-21 SY, teachers will receive, in their curriculum maps and supporting documents, by grade, what standards students missed. This will include instruction on when and how teachers should address those standards during the 2020-2021 school year. ▰ Teachers in a student’s current grade/subject, will address the lost standards when they teach the current grade standards that aligns to the previous year’s standards. ▰ Due to teachers covering more content, the additional days are intended to give teachers more instruction time to review the additional content. ▰ This calendar also allows teachers to look at the social emotional aspect of COVID-19.

slide-11
SLIDE 11

Traditional 190-Days Instructional Calendar

Pros:

q Adds 15 more instructional days to the 175-day instructional calendar q Allows students to recoup instructional time affected by COVID-19 q Allows time within the year for grade repair and credit recovery

  • ptions

11

Cons:

q May increase cost to account for additional work hours/time, utilities, and

  • ther costs

q Requires more time to be spent on review of previous year’s material at beginning of school year q Students juggling extracurricular activities such as sports could face additional complications with scheduling q Research has shown that the economically disadvantaged students and ELL students showed the largest increase with academics compared to

  • ther subgroups (Exceptional Children)
