This story sparked my original interest in what is going on with training our GPST in O & G. My point is that no matter what hopes and assumptions we make about our trainees we may always be surprised. Educational needs vary but good curriculum covering training should be offered to all trainees.

curriculum using a spiral approach. Potential gaps identified were mapped to learning

Extensive subject area to cover so I adopted multiple teaching approaches. 1 Hr short didactic lecture , case presentations, a very graphic quiz, group discussion and floor questions. A GP Surgery bread and butter walk through cases. (particularly Post natal issues ) This has now been running for several years so content has been tweaked based on feedback.

Have you had an O & G post as part of your speciality training?
Yes No
“The speakers on this day were all very
to direction and questioning from us without being intimidating so I felt confident to ask anything.” GPST3 “It never felt silly to ask any kind
questions.” GPST1 “I remember it being useful and relevant, it revealed to me a lot of the unknown unknowns that I had.” GPST2 “It’s nice to problem solve in a group as you can then get an idea of how
and thinking, it kind of increases confidence.” GPST1

“days like this help break it down and make things more tangible, workable. Just make me feel more confident and capable.” GPST3 “This is what I need to do in my job. I left feeling that you know what as Gp’s we can do a lot.” GPST3

“I don’t see much of this at all and feel that lack
exposure would lead to learning needs” GPST2 MALE “Nothing can be too GP focussed for me, it was nice to be reminded of where I will actually be working. You build an idea of how we need to practice and manage in our daily jobs as a GP.” GPST2 “Teaching
has been focused around me being able to work and enjoy work and do it safely. It just leaves you feeling confidence protected and learned.” GPST3

“The big thing about a study day is the chance to see each
chat, catch up, socialise. I really value seeing my peers and a chance to leave work behind for
day.” GPST1
“I
think when you are slogging away in hospital it is so easy to lose sight of what we are training for or about being a GP at all.”
GPST2
“I know for me and most of my peers we really value the social aspects as well
a study day. I think sometimes training is a bit
so it’s nice to get out of being looked in on and be able to look out and see what work and practice may actually be like.” GPST3

General practice teaching from GPs rather than hospital specialists is highly valued by
work!!
Varied ways to teach our trainees in and
practice can aid learning ;so walk about your practice area, use videos, music, photos.
Connectedness
for the trainees during their training schemes is appreciated; ▪ To one another as trainees ▪ To the common goal
being working GPS. ▪ To their training practice and trainers.
