Why a new program?

1. Every Day Math is not meeting the level of rigor and relevance necessary for today’s students, which does not support the RRR initiative. 2. Students are not gaining strong skills in standard algorithms and basic facts with Every Day Math and are not prepared for secondary math. 3. Instruction is difficult to differentiate and isn’t working well with our current transient population. 4. The technology is outdated and insufficient for 21st century best practices. 5. The current version of Every Day Math is not aligned to PA

  • Standards. It is 13 years old.

Selection Process

  • Math Curriculum Committee selected two

programs from a number of presentations by various vendors.

  • Selection Committee chose Go Math! after

detailed presentations by the vendors.

  • Go Math! was presented to the District

Curriculum Committee on March 26, 2014.

How does Go Math! address the main concerns of our current program?

slide-7
SLIDE 7

1st Concern: Every Day Math does not meet the level of rigor and relevance necessary for today’s students, which does not support the RRR initiative.

  • Go Math! emphasizes instruction centered on:

– Depth of Understanding – Problem Solving – Application of Knowledge – Real World, Relevant Performance Tasks

  • Go Math! allows for coherent and rigorous instruction through

blended learning…strong technology.

  • Go Math! prepares students for common and high-stakes tests.
  • Go Math! stresses vocabulary.
  • Go Math! includes a major writing component in each unit which

addresses CD’s initiative of literacy across the curriculum.

slide-8
SLIDE 8

Students are taught using the 5 Es ¡

  • Engagement-What should students know?
  • Exploration-What will students do to use

the concepts?

  • Explanation-How will students construct

meaning of new concepts?

  • Elaboration-How will students

demonstrate mastery of concepts?

  • Evaluation-How will student learning be

assessed?

slide-9
SLIDE 9

2nd Concern: Students do not gain strong skills in standard algorithms and basic facts with Every Day Math.

¡

  • Standard Algorithms and basic facts are integral in GO

Math! Each lesson reviews prerequisite skills.

  • Practice Books provide students with additional, daily

practice to ensure that they achieve fluency, speed, and

  • confidence. They include:
  • A full page of practice for each lesson
  • A full page of spiral review every day
  • Special Getting Ready lessons that reinforce critical

prerequisites for the following grade level

  • Multi-day projects for each Critical Area (RRR Performance

tasks)

slide-10
SLIDE 10

3rd Concern Instruction is difficult to differentiate and does not work well with our current transient population.

  • Students moving in and out of the District should adjust

well with GoMath!

– Teaches standard algorithms – Follows State standards

  • Grab and Go Differentiated Centers Kits
  • Interactive interventions for RtII (Response to Instruction

and Intervention)

  • ELL strategies
  • Diagnostic Assessment to meet each child’s level
  • Three levels of support in each lesson

– Extra support – On level – Enrichment

¡

4th Concern: The EDM technology is outdated and insufficient for 21st century best practices.

  • GO Math! Has multiple 2015 technology features:
  • Math on the Spot videos
  • Interactive Student Edition on-line, which is accessible on

all devices (meeting BYOD needs)

– E-Glossary – i-tools (ex. base 10 blocks) – Homework – Interventions

  • GO Math! Apps
  • QR codes for students to access math videos on cell phones
  • Teacher Digital Management System
slide-12
SLIDE 12

Personal Math Trainer

  • Adaptive Assessments
  • Personalized learning system
  • Aligns assignments to individual need
  • Used for daily intervention, enrichment, and

test-based intervention

  • Profile travels from grade to grade giving

teachers insight into individual student learning each year

slide-13
SLIDE 13

5th Concern: The current version of Everyday Math is not aligned to PA Standards. It is 13 years old. ¡

  • GO Math! Is developed around Content

Standards (which define what students should understand and be able to do by each grade level):

– Counting and Cardinality K – Operations and Algebraic thinking K-5 – Number and Operations in Base Ten K-5 – Measurement and Data K-5 – Geometry K-5 – Number and Operations with Fractions 3-5

slide-14
SLIDE 14

Emphasis on Mathematical Practices Critical for Rigor (Describe habits of mind required to reach a level of math proficiency)

  • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving

them.

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively
  • Construct viable arguments and critique the

reasoning of others

  • Model with mathematics
  • Use appropriate tools strategically
  • Attend to precision
  • Look for and make use of structure
  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
slide-15
SLIDE 15

Benefits of Go Math!

  • Rigorous content
  • Writing rich activities
  • Quality teacher planning features
  • Differentiated Instruction resources
  • Engaging teaching tools
  • Variety of assessments to drive instruction
  • Tools for 21st century learners
  • Real world applications
  • At home support
slide-16
SLIDE 16

Most importantly….

  • It has the tools to help Central Dauphin

meet the three Rs goals of:

  • Rigor through strong content
  • Relevance through application and real

world activities

  • Relationships through student and

home connections and reaching every student at his/her own level
