PLANETREE ALLIANCE

Aurrum is Planetree’s partner in Australia. In line with the Planetree philosophy, all Aurrum residences are committed to giving residents and their families quality care that respects their needs and wishes.

ABOUT PLANETREE

Planetree is a not-for-profit organisation that partners with hospitals and other health care organisations to transform organisational cultures and improve the resident experience. The Planetree philosophy was founded in 1978 by a patient, Angelica Thieriot, after several traumatic hospital experiences. Her experience left her with mixed emotions — the high-tech environment was commendable, but the lack

  • f personalised care during her stay was abysmal. Nurses hurried in and out
  • f her room without becoming familiar with her as an individual, not to mention

familiarising themselves with her medical chart. She spent hours staring at blank walls, which left her feeling lonely and afraid. She formulated her vision of a new type of hospital where patients get support and healing on all levels—a place where individuals could learn more about healthcare and medicine in order to become active participants in their own care and well-being. She founded the Planetree organisation taking its name from the tree that Hippocrates sat under to teach the first medical students in ancient

  • Greece. In 1985, with the same commitment of Hippocrates, Planetree was
  • created. A 13-bed medical/surgical unit in a large San Francisco medical center

became the first Planetree unit in the country. Today, Planetree is a growing global network of acute care hospitals, aged care facilities, ambulatory centres, community health centres and health libraries, representing nearly one million annual hospital admissions, 15 million annual outpatient visits, 100,000 births, and more than 110,000 health care professionals. PLANETREE MEMBERS = USA, AUSTRALIA, BRAZIL, CANADA, DENMARK, MALAYSIA, NETHERLANDS & TURKEY

“AURRUM’S COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE IN ALL ASPECTS OF THE CARE EXPERIENCE – FROM THE PHYSICAL COMFORT OF RESIDENTS, TO THEIR EMOTIONAL AND INTELLECTUAL WELL-BEING IS A ROLE- MODEL FOR WHAT A TRULY HEALING ENVIRONMENT CAN BE. PLANETREE IS HONORED TO BE PARTNERING WITH SUCH AN INNOVATIVE LEADER IN THE FIELD” SUSAN B. FRAMPTON, PH.D.

AURRUM IS PEOPLE-CENTRED, QUALITY DRIVEN, AND SERVICE FOCUSED.

COMPONENTS OF THE PLANETREE MODEL

Value human interactions Creating organisational cultures that support caring, kindness and respect in all interactions between residents, families, and staff members. Include close ones Encouraging the involvement of family and friends as partners in the care experience, whenever possible. Create a healing environment Creating quiet, healing environments using evidence-based design principles that create homelike and welcoming settings that remove barriers between residents, families and caregivers. Be a partner with the community Increasing the role of social & health facilities, redefining health care to include the health and wellness of the community by working with schools and other community partners. Share the information Providing residents with information and educational resources so they can actively participate in their own care. Residents have access to their medical charts, intervention plans; can take part in collaborative care conferences (in which the resident, family, physician, and nurse converse at the bedside). Stimulate through food & nutrition Providing delicious, healthy meals and making good food choices available to residents, families, seven days a week. Evolve through arts & entertainment Creating an atmosphere of serenity and playfulness by displaying artwork in the resident rooms and treatment areas, having volunteers work with residents to create their own art, and inviting local artists, musicians and therapists to help lift spirits through exposing residents to the arts and entertainment. Support the quest for sense Supporting residents, families, and staff to connect with their own inner resources by providing access to dedicated physical spaces such as gardens, meditation rooms, chapels, etc. Communicate through human touch Using caring touch to reduce anxiety, pain, and stress in residents, families, and staff members. Be open to complementary therapies Expanding choice by offering residents access or referral to guided imagery, therapeutic touch, acupuncture, chiropractic, Tai Chi, yoga, and other integrative modalities.
