The College Application Process: Getting Started

Answer the following questions:

  • What are you interested in?
  • How do you see yourself spending your free time?
  • What are you passionate about?
  • How do you learn best?
  • What do you think you want to do in the future?
  • Use Naviance and College Board’s Big Future to learn about

basic college categories and answer questions about college preferences to help narrow the college list.

  • For some students, sports and activities drive the college list.

Other students want a challenging academic environment or a small intimate environment.

  • Review the answers to Step 1.
  • Find colleges that match your preferences. Search for

colleges by location, majors, size and more.

YOUSCIENCE

  • Go to Youscience.com/ga/activate

Hillgrove Juniors and Seniors who have not yet taken YouScience can create their account and access the

  • test. They must have their

GTID# (it is printed on their transcript as well) and a valid email address.

If you need your GTID number to sign up for YouScience, you can find it in your profile in Naviance under “State Student ID”

SENIOR-ITIS

Senioritis can be dangerous! If you stop working too soon or if you start acting as if rules don’t apply to you, it can cause all sorts of problem s.

  • Your best strategy is to RUN to the finish line
  • Don’t stop too soon, get to graduation!
  • Keep the same hard-working, motivated, goal-oriented mind frame (OR find

this mind frame to take you to the finish line)

Are you saying I shouldn’t enjoy m y senior year?!

  • Absolutely NOT!! Go to athletic events, go to the homecoming dance,

spend time with your friends

  • You MUST enjoy your last year but just not to the extent that you develop bad

habits and neglect your responsibilities.

There is a word for the feeling high school seniors have when they believe they have done everything they need to do so now they can coast through the senior year WHAT IS IT? This year will be busier than any other! Homework, clubs, volunteering, having a job, friends, family, AND now college and/or job applications. How can I possibly manage all of this?! How to stay on top of it all:

  • Use a planner or calendar every day.

Find a method that works for you. The only method guaranteed not to work is trying to remember it all and keeping it in your head.

  • Make a to-do list each day for what

you want and need to accomplish

  • Use Naviance to keep track of

application and scholarship deadlines

ATTENDANCE I N THE SENI OR YEAR

  • You are more likely to succeed in academics when you attend school consistently
  • It is difficult for a teacher to build your skills continuously and show classroom and student

progress if students are absent

  • A missed school day is a permanent lost opportunity to learn
  • The best way to build a relationship with your teacher is to come to class. This could help if

you have difficulty later on in the year.

  • More missed school days is linked to more discipline problems at school and with the

justice system

  • School budgets and ratings suffer with poor student attendance
  • There could be less funds to provide a great education for you if you don’t come and the

reputation of our school could decline as well

  • Prepares you for “the real world”
  • Start missing work days without a

VALID excuse and you will find yourself without a job

  • Georgia is an at will state- they can fire you for any reason so don’t let not going to work

be one

  • The sooner you convince yourself it is ok to miss school (or work) the easier it is the next

time to convince yourself it is ok to miss
