  • Incorporate into 4-H Showcase of Talent at DAD
  • Select 1 per district to compete in state final. Will receive scholarship to Congress to include

  • Compete in State Final – will award Gold, Silver and Bronze prizes
  • Winner will be featured on WRAL TV, represent 4-H throughout the year. Travel stipend will

be awarded for this.

  • 4-H'er must use materials from the original Cecil & Leonard. They must perform the same

stories as Ray Wilkinson did. You can go to the following website for more information: http://cecilandleonard.com/ You can choose any of his materials. We are working on transcribing the CD that we have given out so you will have the words. The goal is that this will be available in the next 2 weeks?

  • This is an individual talent, NOT a team act - it is designed for one 4-H'er.
  • This is in additional to the 2 acts per county that you can bring for 4-H Entertains to District

Activity Days. So you can have one Cecil & Leonard and 2 4-H Talent Showcase Acts at DAD.

4-H Presentation Regulations:

  • 1. Age eligibility is established on January 1st of the current year. To participate in

Presentation competition, the 4-H member must be nine years of age prior to January 1st of the current year and not have had his/her 19th birthday before January 1st of the current

  • year. Divisions are 9-10, 11-13, and 14-18.
  • 2. The same presentation may be repeated from one year to the next; however, the

individual's personal development will be much greater if the presentation is revised and improved.

  • 3. A minimum of 5 minutes is recommended and a maximum of 12 minutes is allowed for
  • presentations. Exceptions are as follows: Public Speaking (7 minutes); Chicken Barbecue

(2.5 hours); Turkey Barbecue (2.5 hours); Pork Cookery (2 hours); Beef Char-Grill (2 hours); Horse, Individual 9-10, 11-13 (minimum 4 minutes, maximum 12 minutes); Horse, Individual 14-18 (minimum 9 minutes, maximum 12 minutes); Horse, Team 9-10, 11-13 (minimum 5 minutes, maximum 15 minutes); Horse, Team 14-18 (minimum 10 minutes, maximum 15 minutes); Horse Public Speaking, 9-10, 11-13 (minimum 4 minutes, maximum 10 minutes); Horse Public Speaking, 14-18 (minimum 8 minutes, maximum 10 minutes). One point will be deducted per judge for each minute under the minimum or

  • ver the maximum time in horse categories.
  • 4. Each county may enter two presentations per age category. 4-H members may compete in

no more than one presentation program per year. "4-H Entertains" is not considered a presentation program. **Exceptions:

  • In Horse 9-10, 11-13 and 14-18, a county may enter two individual presentations

and team presentation. Please see Horse rules and regulations.

  • It is desirable that participants in Chicken and Turkey Barbecue, Pork Cookery,

Beef Char-Grill, and Dairy Bowl not participate in the "4-H Entertains" program. However, if they do, they should report to and complete the cooking presentation before participating in "4-H Entertains." Someone should report early to the "4-H Entertains" contest that the 4-H'er will participate later.

  • Each county is limited to a maximum of 10 minutes in the "4-H Entertains"

Program (Talent Contest) involving no more than two acts.

  • A County Winner ribbon is given to each participant. A ribbon and certificate are

awarded to the district winner, and the runner-up receives a ribbon only. One presentation in each category will be designated as the district winner and will be eligible to compete on the state level. The only exception to this rule is in the "4-H Entertains" program in which only blue ribbons and participatory ribbons are awarded and only selected blue ribbon winners are invited to participate in the State "4-H Entertains" program.

slide-15
SLIDE 15
  • The value of a scholarship to 4-H Congress varies for each award. Please note

specific scholarship values for each category. Other expenses are the responsibility

  • f the recipient. To receive the scholarship the 4-H'er must register part or full-time

and must present on Tuesday.

  • Cash awards, either in full or in part, will not be given to the district winners in lieu
  • f the scholarship to attend North Carolina 4-H Congress.
  • When any division winner cannot attend Congress or participate in the state

presentation contest, the award will be given to the District runner-up if the District runner-up registers and attends Congress as a part or full-time delegate and participates in the Presentation Contest.

  • 14-18 level district runners-up in presentations will be invited to participate in the

state contest at the 4-H Congress. There will be no scholarship available for runners-up to attend Congress unless the district winner decides not to participate.

  • 4-H members may continue to compete in a particular presentation category until

declared state winner. An exception is made when runners-up are awarded a scholarship to replace the state winner; they are then no longer eligible to participate in the same program but may participate in others.

  • A team may be composed of no more than two individuals, except in Dairy Bowl,

and 4-H Entertains. For Dairy Bowl, teams must be composed of two or three individuals, and for 4-H Entertains there is no limit. If the team giving a presentation is composed of individual's in two different age divisions (9-10, 11-13, 14-18), the team must compete in the older youths age division.

  • Should a donor not renew or be secured, the district award will be a certificate and

the state award a $50 award for each winner (sponsored by the NC 4-H Development Fund).

  • No live animals may be used in any presentation. No real handguns or firearms are

allowed to be used during presentations.

  • For donor contact and address, refer to the North Carolina 4-H Awards and

Incentives list. More complete information concerning all phases of the awards program is included in the North Carolina Curriculum Guide.

  • Only members 15-years-old or older are eligible to attend the National Junior

Horticulture Association Contest.

  • Presenters in Breads, Dairy Foods, Fruit & Vegetable Use, and Peanut Foods will

be asked to prepare a knowledge presentation. A different level of knowledge and skills is expected between 9-10, 11-13 and 14-18 presentations. Depth of knowledge is stressed on the score sheets for 14-18.

Evaluation Rubrics

Evaluation rubrics measure how well a skill is performed and not whether specific rules are

  • satisfied. While an evaluation rubric may

appear generic, it measures the core skills that can be shown in each presentation format. You should use the evaluation rubrics with your parents, leaders, and other adults to develop your presentation skills before entering county, district or state Presentation

  • Days. The rubrics work equally well for

practice and competition performances. Since the skills being evaluated are the same in practice and competitions, your practices can be ¡focused ¡on ¡what’s ¡important ¡to ¡a ¡good ¡ presentation. At ¡the ¡practice, ¡you ¡and ¡your ¡“audience” ¡ should each fill out an evaluation rubric. Once completed, compare the results and work to improve your presentation skills. If you have a video camera available, you can videotape your presentation for review with the completed evaluation rubric. If a video camera is not available, try using a mirror to assist in evaluating your performance. Practice with these evaluation rubrics because they are the same evaluation forms used when you are competing at presentation

  • events. Compare completed evaluation

rubrics with evaluation rubrics from previous

  • presentations. Determine how you have

improved since your last performance. A good presentation performs well in all skill

  • categories. Each major skill for the

presentation format is listed in the left-hand column of the evaluation rubric. You earn points for each skill based on your performance of that skill. To find the overall quality of the presentation, total the skill

  • scores. Remember that during competition

you will be judged against your fellow participants. Performing very well in a single category does little to raise the overall presentation

  • performance. All presentations can be
  • improved. Just because you think you have

done your best, try to do even better. Even Level ¡4’s ¡have ¡room ¡for ¡improvement. After you complete each competition, keep practicing to maintain your skills and performance quality. Performing at a high level in one competition does not mean that you will automatically perform at the same skill quality level at the next competition.
