What is an AP Course?

Advanced Placement Program (AP) courses are college-level courses offered in high school. AP courses reflect what is taught in top introductory college courses. At the end of the course, students take AP Exams — standardized exams that measure how well students have mastered college-level course work. AP Exams are administered in May in schools worldwide, every year and usually last 3 to 4 hours. The cost per exam is $94. BUHS can help with the cost.

What Makes an AP Course Different?

  • AP classes should reflect taking a University Course in rigor. Classes are more fast-paced and cover more

material than a typical high school class.

  • AP teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing

perspectives, and write clearly and analytically.

  • Curriculum is set by The College Board, a mission-driven organization representing hundreds of colleges,

responsible for the AP program and others, that connects students to college success and opportunity.

  • STUDENTS MUST BE COMMITTED TO COMPLETING THE YEAR-LONG COURSE
  • Students are expected to take the AP exam in May.

What are the benefits of taking Advanced Placement (AP) classes?

  • 1. You save money on tuition

At most colleges, you receive some sort of class credit for AP Exam scores of 3 and higher (exams are scored from 1-5). This credit often goes towards introductory-level college courses in the same subject area as the AP class. Even if an AP Exam costs $94, this fee is far less than the cost of taking a college course and buying a textbook. In most cases, $94 won’t even cover the cost of a used book in college.

  • 2. You can graduate college sooner

Receiving college credit for classes will enable you to graduate sooner, definitely in less than the national average. This is a huge savings, not only on tuition, but also on room and board, and living expenses.

  • 3. The classes impress college admissions officers

College admissions officers are looking for students who can handle a college curriculum. They want to see your commitment to education and the fact that you challenge yourself with AP classes definitely can make you a standout.

6

slide-7
SLIDE 7
  • 4. AP classes help develop college-level academic skills

Since AP classes are more difficult than standard classes, they help you develop college-level academic skills.

  • 5. These classes can increase your chances for college-specific merit aid

Approximately 31 percent of colleges and universities will consider a student's AP coursework when making decisions about which students will receive scholarships. Students who have AP classes on their transcript impress financial aid officers—this often translates into a student receiving more free money to pay for college.

  • 6. You will have more flexibility in college

With several basic classes out of the way, you may want to add a second major or minor, take more electives, or study abroad and still graduate in four years.

  • 7. Demonstrate you are College and Career Ready

Taking at least 2 AP Courses and passing the AP Exams is an indication that you are College and Career Ready.

AP Scholar Award

The AP Program recognizes high school students who have

demonstrated outstanding college-level achievement through AP courses and exams with the AP Scholar Awards.

Although there is no monetary award, each award-winning student can view and print their certificate online, and the award is acknowledged on any AP score report that is sent to colleges after the award has been conferred. BUHS awards students patches for earning a score of 3 or higher on an AP exam.

Three Changes are Coming to AP in 2019-20

1.AP teachers will have access to year-round, new instructional resources that measure student progress. These resources will help students master the content and skills needed for success in the course and on the exam. 2.New streamlined registration and ordering system gives time back to AP Coordinators. 3.Exam ordering is moving from spring to fall.
