  14. ACT & SAT ● Both test English, Math and Writing ● *ACT has a science section, SAT does not ● When should I take the ACT/SAT for the 1st time? Spring! ● What if I take it twice and do worse the 2nd time? ○ Colleges will use your best score! ○ Most students do better the 2nd time ● When is the latest I can take the ACT/SAT and still have it count for college applications? ○ November or December of 12th grade

  15. ACT & SAT ● Should I take the optional essay portion? ○ Yes! Many colleges require the essay test, including the UC’s ● What if I can’t afford the test fees? ○ Contact Ms. Murtagh or your counselor to request a fee waiver

  17. The PSAT ● Have you viewed your PSAT scores yet online? ○ If not, create an account at www.collegeboard.org ● Send your PSAT scores to the Khan Academy website to access FREE personalized test prep

  19. SAT Subject Tests ● SAT Subject Tests are 1 hour tests that allow students to demonstrate achievement in a specific subject ● Subject tests are required for SOME college applications and certain majors (especially STEM)

  20. SAT Subject Tests ● Students who are strong in a subject should consider taking the SAT Subject Test in May or June ○ Examples: Physics, World Language or US History ● Up to 3 subject tests in one sitting ● Good scores strengthen an application, & low scores will not harm an application

  21. FINANCIAL AID = $$ FOR COLLEGE ● The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is an online financial aid application that EVERY college-bound student should complete ● Submit starting in October ● Undocumented students can use the California DREAM financial aid application

  22. FINANCIAL AID = $$ FOR COLLEGE ● Don’t let a college’s “sticker price” prevent you from applying… you never know how much financial aid you can get! ● Some students even pay less at a private college than they would at a public college

Student Athletes Thinking of playing a sport in college?... 11th Grade: • Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center at www.eligibilitycenter.org • Take the ACT or SAT, and include the NCAA Eligibility Center (Code “9999”) as a score recipient • If you need to make up any classes, do so by THIS SUMMER! 12th Grade: • Send an official transcript to the NCAA Eligibility Center TELL YOUR COUNSELOR if you hope to play a college sport!!

  30. Community Colleges Admission Requirements: ● High School Diploma or 18 years of age ● ACT/SAT not required for acceptance ● Apply for Priority Enrollment in FEBRUARY of Senior year How to Prepare: ● Take a math class next year to help you place into higher level college math!
