  4. COURSE SCHEDULING PROGRAM 11 th – 12 th GRADES 2019-2020 School Year

  5. Course Selection • Course selection materials will be handed out on Wednesday, January 16 th during advisory. • Extra materials are on the hallway table outside of the counseling office. (i.e. 12 th grade Student OFF form) • Students need to select courses totaling 8 credits and at least 2 alternate courses – Alternate courses are often used. Select courses you would like to take. • Courses selected on Course Request Sheet are to be inputted into Skyward by Wednesday, January 23 rd .

  6. Input into Skyward • Once students have selected courses on their course request sheet, course request need to be inputted into Skyward. • Select courses in Skyward based on COURSE NUMBER. • Students can access their transcript under “Portfolio” in Skyward. This is the resource they need to use to see what classes they have completed and what still needs to be taken.

  7. Graduation Plans • Foundation High School Plan (FHSP) – students need 26 credits to graduate. • 4x4 curriculum is still smart. • Endorsements can be changed to fit elective courses students would like to take. • Endorsements have no effect of getting into college.

  8. Core Curriculum • English – 4 credits is required • Math – 4 credits including Algebra 2 • Science – 4 credits – including either Chemistry or Physics • Social Studies – 4 credits - both Government and Economics taken during 12 th grade. These are 9 week courses.

  9. WAYS TO EARN CREDIT • On-Level, PreAP and AP courses at Hebron • Virtual Learning Academy – VLA/TxVSN – Extra steps for registration required. • Blended Courses – offered through VLA – Extra steps for registration required. • Dual Credit – offered through Collin College. These courses must be registered through Collin College.

PREAP, AP, ON-LEVEL • Hebron is a very strong academic school. • Hebron is a College Prep School. • Think about accelerated block and stress of your student. 2 core in fall & spring is not scheduling policy. • Heavy course loads, programs, DJ/CCE, or athletics could load one semester heavier than another.

  11. Virtual Learning Academy (VLA) • District offers on-line courses. • Course can be taken either INSIDE or OUTSIDE of the school day. Cost is associated with some courses. • INSIDE – Scheduled for 1 st or 4 th period. Expectation is student is not on campus. • Registering for courses is a different procedure – See VLA website.

Gifted & Talented • Curriculum is PAP and AP. • Number of sections created in Master Schedule for “Designated GT” is based on Student Course Request. • Scheduling courses can be very limiting if students selects all core classes as “GT”. • All PAP and AP classes have both GT and Non- GT students.

  13. SCHEDULE EXAMPLES • FALL SEMESTER SPRING SEMESTER 1 st – BAND 1 st - BAND 2 nd – Algebra 2 PAP 2 nd – US History 3 rd – English 3 AP 3 rd – CCE class 4 th – Physics 1 AP 4 th – CCE class Because CCE had to be in spring, fall semester was heavy.

SCHEDULE EXAMPLES • FALL SEMESTER SPRING SEMESTER 1 ST – HUMANITIES 1 ST - HUMANITIES 2 ND – CHOIR 2 ND – CHOIR 3 RD – Interior Design 3 RD – PreCal PAP 4 TH – Psychology/Sociology 4 TH – Physics 1 AP Elective choices were only offered in the fall and the two 9 week courses selected only paired in the fall.

SCHEDULE EXAMPLE • FALL SEMESTER SPRING SEMESTER 1 st – Chemistry AP 1 st – Chemistry AP 2 nd – Humanities 2 nd - Humanities 3 rd – PreCal PAP 3 rd – Food Science 4 th – Athletics 4 th – Athletics Students has 3 classes that will be taught all year leaving only 1 period open in both fall and spring.

  17. 11 th grade - English 11 th grade students are required to take English 3. Class can be taken as on-level, Advanced Placement (AP), Humanities AP, VLA, BlendED, or Dual Credit. English 3 is required for graduation.

AP ENGLISH 11 th – 12 th GRADES • Focus on critical reading, grammar study, vocabulary enhancement and formal writing through innovative strategies. • The course assumes the ability & willingness of the student to read independently daily to prepare for class discussions and written assignments. • Class-selected and independently-selected works read daily.

  19. ENGLISH – 11 TH GRADE • On-level English 3 – 18 weeks. • AP English 3 – 18 weeks. • AP HUMANITIES – English 3AP and US History AP are taught together – 36 weeks alternating days each week. • VLA – Inside or Outside of the school day. • BLENDED – Flexible Mobility – 3 days a week face-to-face instruction – 2 days on-line.

  20. Dual Credit – 11 TH GRADE • Dual Credit – offered through Collin College • English 1301 and 1302 – College Freshman English – 6 hours of college credit. ENG 1301 is fall (.5 credit) and ENG 1302 is spring (.5 credit). Course is taken with HIS 1301 and 1302. • Students register with Collin for courses. Students must register both fall and spring semesters. Several step process and enrollment in the course is completed when payment is made.

ENGLISH – 12 TH GRADE • On-level English 4 – 18 weeks. • AP English 4 – 18 weeks. • VLA – Inside or Outside of the school day. • BLENDED – Flexible Mobility – 3 days a week face to face instruction – 2 days on-line. • Advanced Education (AE) courses – any course under the core English curriculum can be substituted for English 4.

  22. Dual Credit – 12th GRADE Students that took dual credit English during 11 th grade can now take dual credit English for 12 th grade credit. ENGL 2327 – American Lit 1 (Fall Semester) SPCH 1311 – Intro to Speech Communications (Spring Semester) Both these classes will count for full credit of English 4. Students can “pair” these classes with Government and Economics dual credit courses. Both classes meet core curriculum requirements in college.

  23. 11 th grade – US History US History is the course all 11 th graders must take. This course can be taken as on-level, Advanced Placement (AP), Humanities (AP), VLA, or Dual Credit. This course is a STAAR (EOC) tested course. Both course and EOC must be passed for graduation from high school.

AP US HISTORY (APUSH) • Designed to have the rigor experienced by a college freshman. • Essay writing, participate in discussions, read documents at the college level. • Course requires a substantial time commitment from students outside of class if they hope to be successful. • First 3 – 6 weeks are challenging as students learn skills needed to be successful.

  25. AP US HISTORY (APUSH) • Time management will be the key skill. • Self-motivated. • Enjoys academic challenge. • Study skills and note-taking skills at high level. • Effective reading, making judgments and thinking. • Puts learning equal to or above the grade earned in the class.

  26. AP US HISTORY – (APUSH) • AP Class at Hebron – 27 weeks. Students must take both EARLY US HISTORY and APUSH. • AP HUMANITIES – APUSH and English 3AP are taught together – 36 weeks alternating days each week • VLA – Inside or Outside the school day

  27. AP US HISTORY DUAL CREDIT • Dual Credit – offered through Collin College • US HISTORY 1301 and 1302 – College US History – 6 college hours. HIST 1301 is taken in the fall semester and HIST 1302 is in the spring semester. Courses are taken with ENG 1301 and ENG 1302. • Students register with Collin for each course. Several step process and ends with course payment each semester.
