SLIDE 5

What We Do

 Volunteer our time - Over 400 local chapters  Educate - Teach youth and adults about angling

and conservation

 Participate – Stream preservation projects  Partner – With local watershed associations,

conservation organizations, and Colleges

 Donate – To national and statewide programs to

protect and conserve coldwater fisheries

 Practice – Good conservation: catch and release,

low impact recreation

TU Pilot Program in PA Fish & Boat Commission Unassessed Waters Initiative

 GOAL: Proactively identify and properly classify the most at-risk streams

which support naturally reproducing trout populations in order to protect, conserve and enhance those waters as wild trout streams

 Chapter members participate by fishing streams on the unassessed

waters list and report findings and presence of trout to the PF&BC

 PF&BC performs follow-up stream surveys by trained staff and partner

academic institutions to confirm findings

 Properly collected data used to support stream designations where

applicable to “Wild Trout” designation which can be used by PADEP to classify stream to higher Chapter 93 protective status

Susquehanna Chapter TU Awarded a

Cold Water Heritage Grant Rock Run Watershed Conservation Plan

Purpose:

 Develop Coldwater Heritage Plan for the watershed  Gather, summarize, coordinate water quality data  Evaluate acidity issues in non-attaining tributaries  Identify potential restoration projects  Assess Aquatic Organism Passage (culverts) issues  Establish volunteer-based WQ monitoring program

through TU’s PA Coldwater Conservation Corps

Project Elements and Partners

 Collect existing data from various sources

 PA DCNR, PF&BC, USGS, SRBC, PA DEP, Lycoming Creek Watershed Assoc.,

WMWA, Lyco Co Conservation District, NC Source Water Protection Alliance

 Hold interagency meeting(s) to coordinate efforts, information

exchange, future work

 Evaluate data for gaps, develop, carry out plan for supplemental

sampling sites (est. 10) and Lycoming College CWI and CCC sampling

 Inventory fish passage obstacles  Evaluate non-attaining streams, develop potential sites and strategies

for remediation projects to enhance water quality and ecological/fisheries resources of the watershed

 Prepare final report and hold interagency and public outreach

meeting(s) to present findings and recommendations

Preserve, Protect, Restore

Preserve our clean, cold water resources for future generations to enjoy in the natural, wild state Protect the habitat, water quality and ecological diversity of

  • ur most pristine watersheds

Restore streams impacted by past natural resource extraction activities (eg. coal mining, timbering, poor land use practices)

Pass along these values to the next generation
