The Subject Selection Process

HSC Subject Selection Information Session

slide-40
SLIDE 40

Subject Selection Process

Step 1:

* Read the handbook * Speak to people (teachers, parents, older students) * Refer to websites and other resources * Come up with a list of subjects in order of preference

slide-41
SLIDE 41

http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/publications/year10-booklet-20.pdf

slide-42
SLIDE 42

Choosing Subjects

  • Abilities
  • Interests/Motivation
  • Career aspirations and needs
  • Syllabus requirements - Practical/Major works
  • Subject combinations
  • Other commitments

Most students know what they don’t want to study

slide-43
SLIDE 43

A possible way to choose…

Don’t be too narrow minded!

  • What one subject do you really want to do?
  • What 1 or 2 subject(s) do you really not want to do?
  • Consider all others - list them as ‘probably’ vs ‘possibly’
  • Most students will need 7 or 8 subjects as well as English

that they are prepared to do (in case the lines don’t match)

slide-44
SLIDE 44

Subject Selection Process

Step 2: Log in to web choices (using your webcode) and submit choices Refer to dates in upcoming emails next week.

slide-45
SLIDE 45

Subject Selection Process

Step 3: Wait for an email from Mrs Wark publishing subject lines for 2020. Expected - by the end of Term 3 Step 4: You will then enter your fjnal choices online

  • ver the holidays

Subject Selection Process

Step 5: Final confjrmation of subject allocation Expected by the end of Term 4 We will be in contact earlier if there are any problems

slide-49
SLIDE 49

What if I don’t get the subjects I want?

  • Mrs Wark will know (from your preferences) and will speak with

you about options in Week 4 to 7 of Term 4

  • You may need to choose a different subject
  • Correspondence (additional costs approx. $800-1000 per year) -

there are limits on our ability to access this.

slide-50
SLIDE 50

Any problems at any stage?

Students/parents to meet with Advisor, Mr Taylor or Mrs Wark to look at possible solutions. Families will be contacted as soon as we know there are problems with any selections.

slide-51
SLIDE 51

What if I change my mind between now and the start of Yr 11?

  • During 2017: let Mrs Wark know (via email initially)
  • We will then determine if you still meet HSC eligibility

criteria and advise as necessary

  • Be aware that you may not be able to swap to another class

if it is already full - so consider carefully right from the start

slide-52
SLIDE 52

What if I change my mind once Year 11 has started?

  • Let Mr Taylor know (via email) as soon as possible.
  • Who will then determine if you still meet HSC eligibility

criteria and advise as necessary. Paperwork to be completed - signed by parents.

  • Be aware that you may not be able to swap to another class if

it is already full - so consider carefully even for the initial survey.

  • You will have missed the introductory work - hard to catch up.
  • Not advised after 3 to 4 weeks of study
