A vessel operating on HFO with a scrubber has a lower CO2 footprint than vessels operating on compliant fuels, because of the refining process needed to make low sulphur fuels. A scrubber also reduces particulate matter of 75% or more.

IMO is the United Nations specialized agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping, and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships. In October 2016, IMO voted on a global sulphur

took effect and a global sulphur cap at 0,5% applied in addition to the emission control areas where SOx emissions are not allowed to exceed 0,1%.
