Supporting your Child in English
- Read the texts or watch adaptations and
discuss characters/events.
- Revision guides are useful but workbooks
even more so.
- There are lots of useful resources online:
BBC Bitesize, Sparknotes, YouTube tutorials (Mr Bruff)
- Check written accuracy
Final Thoughts
- Use time effectively through a revision
timetable
- Always prepare in an active and creative way
- Use exam papers to test ongoing
understanding
- Practice has more influence than “talent”
Poor preparation leads to poor performance - The consequences can be disastrous!
Year 11 Progress and how we move forwards
“Unlocking your child’s potential”
“Unlocking your child’s potential”
Last years highlights
- 2 students gained over 3 grades better than
expected and they were bright students
- 38% of students got 8 or above GCSE’s at
grades between 9-4
- All of this was achieved from a lower starting
point than our cohort
- Our 6th form provided 5 Russell university
students with 72% successful with their university applications
“Unlocking your child’s potential”
Try and identify your target
- What does your child’s path look like between 16 and
18?
- TDMS 6th form will be looking for 5 grade 5s or better
- Different colleges and different courses within the
same college will be looking for different grades
- What do the main apprenticeship suppliers require?
- Once you have a target , it is easier to aim for it
“Unlocking your child’s potential”
How can you help?
- Ensure your child has the relevant revision
guides and work books
- They have the equipment needed for their
courses
- Ensure they are on time, fed and watered
- School work and life is their responsibility but
you can help them along the way
Over 70% can be forgotten in 24 hours unless it is reviewed

“Unlocking your child’s potential”
10 top tips

not just the child who is under pressure
- There’s nothing wrong with a kick-about!
- You get out what you put in
- Bribes do not work- they imply parents don’t
trust children and the only reward for doing well is financial
