The Workshop “Beyond Semantics”

Journal Proposal

Journal Dialogue and Discourse Founded 2009 From the journal’s website:

D&D is the first international journal dedicated exclusively to work that deals with language “beyond the single sentence”, in discourse (i.e., text, monologue) and dialogue. Open to interested readers everywhere (open access).

The Workshop “Beyond Semantics”

Goals of the Workshop

Bring together Theoretical linguists who use texts and corpora for pragmatic or discourse-related research questions Corpus linguists / computational linguists who create and annotate relevant corpus resources, or exploit them Explore both sides of the coin Evaluate theory of pragmatic and discourse phenomena by applying it to corpus data Optain linguistically better informed annotated data

The Workshop “Beyond Semantics”

Goals of the Workshop

Raising awareness for the challenges and merits of the annotation of “beyond” phenomena More general / more specific corpus queries Evaluation of theory by inter-annotator agreement Training of models for natural language processing that go beyond syntax

Our Background

About Us/Our Joint Work

Corpus-based investigations Local coherence: function of the sentence-initial position in German Abstract anaphora (discourse-deictic anaphora) → Annotation of relevant factors

Stefanie Dipper & Heike Zinsmeister Beyond Semantics DGfS 2011 14 / 25

slide-15
SLIDE 15

Our Background

The Annotation Task: Abstract Anaphora

Example Each fall, penguins migrate to Fiji. (Byron 2002)

  • a. That’s why I’m going there next month.

– FACT

  • b. It happens just before the eggs hatch.

– EVENT

Stefanie Dipper & Heike Zinsmeister Beyond Semantics DGfS 2011 15 / 25

slide-16
SLIDE 16

Our Background

The Annotation Task: Three Subtasks

1

Locating the antecedent

2

Semantic type of the anaphor (‘event’, ‘fact’, . . . )

3

Semantic type of the antecedent

Our Background

Task 1: Locating the Antecedent “Namely Test”

Idea: Formulate an appositive clause behind the anaphor, in the form of nämlich dass/ob/wenn . . . ‘namely that/if/when . . . ’ The appositive clause indicates the string of the antecedent

“Namely Test”: Example (DE)

Example [39637] Hier sehen wir wie in Georgien — es ist in der vorherigen Debatte angesprochen worden —, dass Russland leider auch hier seinen Einfluss nicht zur Stabilisierung, sondern zur Destabilisierung nutzt. [39638] Ich würde mir wirklich wünschen, dass unsere Regierungen dies bei den häufigen Kontakten mit der russischen Seite auch in Bezug auf Moldawien deutlich zum Ausdruck bringen würden.

“Namely Test”: Example (EN Translation)

Example [39637] Here too, as in Georgia as we discussed in the previous debate we see that Russia is not using its influence to stabilise, but unfortunately to destabilise the situation. [39638] I really do wish that our governments would address this issue unequivocally, also in connection with Moldova, in their frequent contacts with Russia.

Task 2: Semantic Type of the Anaphor “NP-Replacement Test”

Idea Replace the anaphor by a suitable NP , in the form of demonstrative determiner + head noun List of suitable head nouns: Ereignis, Zustand, Maßnahme, Vorgang, Einschätzung, Notwendigkeit, . . . ‘event, state, measure, process, assessment, necessity, . . . ’ The head noun indicates the semantic type of the anaphor

Our Background

Task 3: Semantic Type of the Antecedent “Colon Test”

Idea: Try to express the speaker’s view towards the antecedent’s

  • content. Is it a fact that the speaker reports? Is it a goal that s/he

wants to be pursued? Is it a problem that s/he wants to point out? Etc. Formulate a suitable phrase that expresses this view and that ends with a colon. Suitable phrases are e.g.

Ich stelle diese Tatsache fest: [antecedent] ‘I state the following fact:’ Ich sehe die folgende(n) Möglichkeit(en): [antecedent] ‘I see the following possibilities:’

The object head noun indicates the semantic type of the antecedent
