Rochdale Gasholders

nationalgrid Who is National Grid?

  • We are an international electricity and gas company.
  • We own and operate the gas transmission network in Great

Britain and have done since 1990.

  • We work to connect people and businesses to the energy they

need.

nationa grid The Site nationagrid Heritage information

  • The gasholder site once formed

part of the expansive Rochdale Gasworks which opened in 1824.

  • As demand for gas increased, so

too did the site. The remaining gasholder was constructed in 1894 and rebuilt

in

1959 to manage greater post-war demand.

  • The gasholders were used

until

February 2013.

The story so far The story so far nationaigrid

  • We dismantled two of the gasholders at

the site last year.

  • During this time we removed water and

cleaned the inside

  • f the gasholders,

before dismantling the structures piece by piece.

  • We completed the work and left the site in

May 2015.

  • We also donated a manufacturing plaque

from the above ground holder to the local

Touchstones Museum, to tell the story of the role of gasholders

in

Rochdale to future generations.

nationaigrid Our upcoming work

  • We are now starting to take down the remaining gasholder at the

site.

  • The gasholder has not been used for several years and is being

removed as part of our plans to prepare the site to be brought back into beneficial use.

  • We’ll be cleaning, then removing the gasholder piece by piece.

We’ll also be filling holes in the ground left by the gasholders

removed last year.

  • There are three entrances to the site; Fern Street, Dane Street

and Church Street. The Fern Street entrance will be used for vehicles as part of the gasholder dismantling. The Dane Street entrance will be used by vehicles filling in the holes left by the gasholders we removed last year. The Church Street entrance may be used by site staff for pedestrian access between the two sites.

Dismantling the gasholder

I

  • Working hours will be approximately

8am to 6pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 1pm on some Saturdays.

  • We

will

dismantle the gasholder carefully, from the inside, to help to minimise any impact

  • n
  • ur

neighbours.

  • We will commence works in March

and aim to complete by November. Note that the

initial

works

will

comprise of infilling of the holder voids.

An example of gasholder removal 11

nationalgrid Key considerations

  • The community: We aim to be a good neighbour and will do everything

we can to make sure disruption is kept to a minimum. Regular monitoring

will be in place throughout the work to limit the impact on residents.

  • Safety: Safety is our top priority. We will work quickly and efficiently to

remove the remaining gasholder and infill the holes in the ground, working

in a safe manner at all times.

  • Ecology: We know that a pair of peregrine falcons, who nest and rear

young in the Town Hall use the gasholder as a vantage point for hunting. When dismantling of the holder commences, the birds will hunt from another high point in Rochdale.

  • Odour: You may notice some odour during the dismantling. Any odours

will be temporary and are not dangerous to people or the environment.

We will let the community know if we anticipate any work that has a greater risk of odour and will use equipment to address odour, should it become an issue.

Completion

  • Following removal of the

gasholder, the site will be cleared and restored for future use.

  • We expect to complete the

work and be off site by the end of 2016.

Future plans for the site

  • Though the gasholder will be removed, the active gas distribution

plant will remain.

  • There are no immediate plans to develop the gasholder site

following removal of the gasholder.

Community relations

  • We recently held a drop-in

session for local residents

  • We’ll be keeping the local

community informed during the project

  • We will engage with councillors

and community representatives

  • We welcome ideas of how we can

be involved in the local community
