 Federal Law was unclear about school food donations

before November 2011

 Unawareness of the recent changes to the law  Fear of time commitment to execute the plan  Schools simply say their students don’t waste that

much food.

 The 1996 Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food

Donation Act Protects Businesses from frivolous lawsuits who donate their surplus food to a qualified charity rather than dumping it into a landfill.

 The Richard Russell National School Lunch Act was

amended in 2011 to clarify that schools are afforded the same legal protections as businesses for food donations to a qualified charity.

 Many Scientists believe carbon emissions are harming

  • ur environment and effecting climate change

 Methane Gas has 21 times more negative impact to the

environment than CO2.

 Landfills are responsible for 20% of all methane

emissions, the third highest contributor of such

  • emissions. 90% of those methane gas emissions are

from rotting food dumped in our landfills.

 It’s cost effective……free to schools.  It requires very little if any additional time from

cafeteria staff

 K-12 Food Rescue programs can be started in less than

  • ne month in most school districts
slide-52
SLIDE 52

 Every 10 pounds of rescued food equals 8 pounds of

C02 equivalents being emitted into the environment

 Landfill waste volume is reduced  As more food is consumed instead of wasted, less food

needs to be produced, conserving other resources like water and oil.
