Research aim

  • 1. To assess relative injury burden

across geographic regions,

  • 2. To generate idea or hypothesis prior

to confirmatory epi studies

  • 3. To identify priority areas to prioritise

public health interventions

Data

Sport/leisure injury hospitalisation data from Victorian Injury Surveillance Unit (VISU) for the year 2005-2014 inclusive

Analysis

EB smoothed injury hospitalisation rates for all Victorian LGAs Moran’s I and and Getis-Ord Gi* for spatial autocorrelation test and identification of hotspots and coldspots

Results

Figure 1: Hotspots and coldspots of overall sport/leisure injury hospitalisation rates Figure 2: Hotspots and coldspots of 1) Australian football 2) Soccer 3) Basketball 4) Cricket, injury hospitalisation rates

  • 1. Australian football
  • 2. Soccer
  • 3. Basketball
  • 4. Cricket

Conclusions

  • The first study to have used these geospatial methods in sport/leisure injury in

Australia

  • Considerable geographic variation with higher hospitalisation in Western-part
  • f Victoria
  • By specific sports, high and low hospitalisation rates clustered in specific

regions in Victoria

  • Geographic analysis of sport/leisure injuries is important to provide an

evidence base for targeted injury prevention efforts
