  2. What’s New in Physical Education in Illinois... Enhanced P.E. Task Force - Illinois State Board of Education “Physical Education correlates directly to the health and well-being of students for the rest of their lives and has cognitive benefits, making students more receptive to learning. There is a significant body of research showing that children who are more physically active perform better in class and on standardized tests. Improving opportunities for physical activity is an imperative for improving our children’s academic achievement and their health. P.E. and physical activity during the school day leads to better learners, better behavior in the classroom, and better student health.” ISBE Required Fitness Assessments for Grades 3 - 12 Beginning Spring 2017, Districts must assess using Fitness Gram ○ Aerobic Capacity (Pacer Test), Flexibility (Sit and Reach Test), Muscular Endurance ○ (Curl-up Test), Muscular Strength (Push-up Test) Assessment results reported to ISBE for Grades 5, 7, and 10 (monitor progress of students ○ in achieving and maintaining health-enhancing level of physical fitness) Emphasis on daily moderate to vigorous activity

  3. Illinois Learning Standards State Goal 19: Movement Skills Acquire movement and motor skills and understand concepts necessary to engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity. A - Demonstrate physical competency in a variety of motor skills and movement patterns. B - Analyze various movement concepts and applications. C - Demonstrate knowledge of rules, safety and strategies during physical activity.

  5. Illinois Learning Standards State Goal 20: Physical Fitness What does this look like in District 58? Achieve and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness based upon continual self-assessment. A- Know and apply health-related and skill-related components of fitness to learning and performance of physical activities. B- Assess individual fitness levels. C- Set goals based on fitness data and develop, implement, and monitor individual fitness improvement plans.
