What can you control? (see page 5)

Sensible course selection Applying yourself (seeking excellence)

  • prepare for the intensity of your WACE exams in November 2014

 in every class  at home with ≥ 6 intense ½ hour sessions per course per week for set homework, research, review preparation for assessments and study fro exams

  • submission of assessment tasks on time to control grade allocation
  • ngoing preparation / review for examinations to control the mark adjustment process

Life balance and sensible priorities

  • Relationships (family and friends)
  • Health – nutrition, exercise, sleep
  • Study
  • Work commitments (ATAR  6 h per week)

Glossary

  • ATAR

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank Derived from your TEA – changes annually

  • LOTE Bonus

Increases TEA by 10% of the final scaled score in a LOTE course for entry to Curtin, ECU, Murdoch and UWA

  • Scaling

Ranks courses by ‘difficulty’ – adjusts marks for TEA

  • Scaled Score

Final mark from each course used to calculate your TEA

  • Standardise

Allows comparison marks from different courses (mean 60)

  • Moderate

Adjusts school marks using WACE exam results for the school (not individual)

  • TEA

Tertiary Entrance Aggregate - sum of your best 4 scaled scores (can accumulate over 5 consecutive years)

  • WACE

Western Australian Certificate of Education Mark Adjustment Data for all WA schools in Year 12 2013

While the combined score for each course is 50% school* and 50% WACE exam, school marks are moderated by the WACE exam. Course scaling is largely out of our control (based on the performance of every student in a particular course compared to every other course they study). The one thing we can control and must improve is exam performance.
