  • 1. Less time commuting to work (saves time and money) – really good for the

environment* (canals in Venice are clear for the first time)!

  • 2. Can be more comfortable
  • 3. We have an established culture of using technology and connecting

with teams in different geographical regions (we are ahead of the game)

  • 4. More time with our families and people we love

q We are fortunate to have supportive managers and co-workers. q Many of us are also still getting paid.

slide-7

  • 1. Can be socially isolating
  • 2. Lack of the face-to-face contact with our co-workers
  • 3. Lack of access to physical documents and timely information (it can

take more time to find information and documents from co-workers and other team members)

  • 4. Distractions at home (but I have TIPS to help!)
  • 5. Lack of “discipline” … no one will know if I watch Netflix

BEST PRACTICES… TECHNOLOGY CAN FAIL

What options do you have if you suddenly experience a power outage? How about irregular Wi-Fi (or if internet drops)? Do you know how to reinstall software, or download additional software? This may be important if using a work laptop.

Make a list of all possible scenarios you could face. IF you have some free time contact your IT departments for solutions (or search online) It is a good idea to have your laptop and other devices fully charged (overnight) Many collaborating platforms have downloadable Apps for

  • ther devices… great idea

for backup in case your laptop stops working (etc)

slide-14
SLIDE 14

BEST PRACTICES… USING TECHNOLOGY TO CONNECT

As we start using these platforms with increasing frequency, we need to consider what to use in light of limited (and high-demand) resources

Use Zoom for group video meetings where you need to see people and/or share screen and files Use Teleconference line for group meetings – especially for teams with limited technology, preferences for phone conversation, or don’t have access to a screen with audio Use WhatsApp for 1-

  • n-1 meetings, 1-on-1

chats, group chats, video calls (or informal check-in calls with co-workers Use Slack during the hours you are working – for quick collaboration, group chats, 1-on- 1 chats and video calls (use Chrome)

slide-15

BEST PRACTICES… USING TECHNOLOGY TO CONNECT

Contact your cell phone provider (e.g. Fido, Rogers, Bell) and internet provider (e.g Shaw, Telus) to see what they are offering clients in light

  • f the COVID-19 pandemic

BEST PRACTICES… OTHER COLLABORATION TOOLS

Your organizations/institutions may be using other platforms. Some free options and some you may need to pay for…

Contact your IT departments or managers to see how you can access these platforms – learn them now before it gets busy so you always have a back up

slide-17
SLIDE 17

BEST PRACTICES… BACK-UP YOUR DOCS/FILES

  • 1. This may be our “new normal” for a while.
  • 2. Find a system that works for you and your university/organization.

§ U of C – we have to back-up to the server via VPN/shared drives § Can-SOLVE CKD – we back up our shared files to OneDrive 3.

Cloud back-up options (OneDrive, iCloud, Dropbox) and considerations

  • 4. How will you sync files/docs when we get back to the office?

Ask your co-workers and friends who are pros are working from home for tips. You may have to be your own IT Manager when working from home. But, let us make an effort to share these tips and best-practices
