INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED: WHAT WE HEARD

WHY AN URBAN DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK? GOALS OF THIS MEETING DOCUMENTS REVIEWED INTERVIEWS CONDUCTED OBSERVATIONS ASSETS FIVE KEY ISSUES & CHALLENGES FIVE EMERGING OPPORTUNITIES

Infrastructure:

  • Elimination of Dufferin jog will be great to remove barriers on Queen Street

Developments:

  • Unsure whether CAMH redevelopment will improve Queen Street retail
  • Must have buildings that front face on Queen Street
  • New condo development will bring new customers

Character:

  • Need to focus on independent stores, especially, grocery, hardware, drug

stores to serve residents

  • Enhance events and festivals
  • Don’t want big box stores, want a mix of shops
  • Keep the neighbourhood as a place people want to live in

Branding:

  • Need something that individual shop owners can identify with (decal, sticker

with contact)

  • Possible design a poster for WQW

Heritage:

  • Heritage valued but concerns perceived around constraints of heritage district
  • HCD study now underway for area between railway and Dovercourt

(CONTINUED) Streetscapes/Pedestrian Spaces:

  • St. Chris House needs to be considered in creation of a gateway at Bathurst
  • Streetscape needs to be unique, tied to art and design, showcase the talent
  • Priority must be more lighting; better planting, public art banners
  • Great that banners are up
  • Could do a better job of branding the neighbourhood, change season to

season

  • Long term plan to remove overhead hydro
  • Awnings at street would enhance pedestrian experience
  • Need facade guidelines to help business owners with building improvements
  • Information kiosks/posts to limit postering on light posts
  • Look at the back lanes
  • Enhance with lighting, improve paving
  • Need more green space
  • Could be provided with enhanced streetscape

Parking:

  • Parking is a problem
  • Parking is not a problem
  • Need an alternative way of dealing with parking
  • Need better bike facilities
