4 KEY THOUGHTS
The world of work has changed from when we went to school – job for
life, industries, pragmatic movement, automation, required skill sets
There are a number of pathways from here to further study and work
and there will be a number of pathways from there as well
Each child is different and they have their dreams and aspirations (they
may well not match our parental dreams and aspirations) – the juggling act is to provide the support balanced with the reality – Make the endpoint match the kid –not the kid match the endpoint
Be informed – there is a great deal of information available –we are
providing it through our careers program

PATHWAYS
OP V.S ATAR
All students at SSC select 6 subjects to study throughout year 11 and year 12
ATAR
Approximately 30 students across Queensland will gain ATAR
- f 99.95
Approximately another 30 students will gain ATAR of 99.90 Calculated from Unit 3 & 4 results only.
ATAR ELGIBILITY AND ENGLISH
To gain an ATAR, students must also satisfactorily pass one of the
following subjects:
ü English ü Essential English ü Literature While students must meet this standard to be eligible to receive an
ATAR, it won’t be mandatory for a student’s English result to be included in the calculation of their ATAR.
ESSENTIAL ENGLISH SPECIALIST MATHEMATICS ACCOUNTING BUSINESS MODERN HISTORY MUSIC
GENERAL AND EXTENSION SUBJECTS
New and redeveloped General subject syllabuses (currently known as
Authority subjects) are developmental four-unit courses of study.
General subjects include Extension subjects and include external
assessment.
Extension subjects are studied either concurrently with Units 3 and 4 of
the General course of study. MUSIC + MUSIC EXTENSION
Extension syllabuses are courses of study that consist of two units
(Units 3 and 4).
The results from Units 3 and 4 contribute to the award of a QCE and
to ATAR calculations.
EXTERNAL ASSESSMENTS
External assessments will be held annually in Term 4. The assessment schedule will be released in the year prior to the external
assessment sittings.
At most, students may be required to sit two external assessments in one day External assessment for General Mathematics, Science, Arts, Languages and
Music Extension subjects will cover subject matter in Units 3 and 4 of the
- syllabus. For all other General subjects, it will assess subject matter in Unit 4.
General Mathematics and Science subjects, a student’s external assessment
result will contribute 50% to their final subject result.
All other General subjects, it will contribute 25%. There will be no catch-up day if students are sick, etc., on the day of the
assessment
APPLIED SUBJECTS
Applied subjects are suited to students who are primarily interested in
pathways beyond senior secondary schooling that lead to vocational education and training or work.
Applied syllabuses are developmental four-unit courses of study. Results from assessment in Applied subjects contribute to the award of
a QCE and results from Units 3 and 4 may contribute as a single input to ATAR calculation.
Applied syllabuses use four summative internal assessments from Units 3
and 4 to determine a student’s exit result.
The CIA for Essential English and Essential Mathematics is based on the
learning described in Unit 3 of the respective syllabus
VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING
VET certificates and qualifications provide a range of pathways to work,
further education and training and is a key part of the ATAR and new QCE system.
Achievement of a
VET Certificate III or above, in combination with results in General subjects, can contribute to the calculation of a student’s Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).
Each
VET qualification level (certificate III or higher) will have a single scaled score that can be included in a student’s ATAR.
It is expected that the scaled score for a completed
VET diploma will be higher than that for a completed VET certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than the scaled score for a completed VET certificate III.

STUDENT PATHWAYS
SELECTING SUBJECTS
- Know your Pathway: Are you Pathway A, B or C?
- Select subjects that match your ability level, motivation and interests
- Understand the prerequisite requirements for your pathways
- Select your best fit 6 subjects- Focus on the Skills you will gain from each
subject for your pathway
- Consult the Senior Subject Handbook
- Be aware of External Assessment Requirements- Are you prepared to sit
External Assessment in Term 4 of year 12?
- Discuss your proposed selections with your classroom teachers
FOCUS ON THE SKILLS
PHYSICS: “The purpose of senior Science subjects in Queensland is to
introduce students to a scientific discipline. Students will be required to learn and apply aspects of the knowledge and skill of the discipline (thinking, experimentation, problem-solving and research skills, understand how it works and how it may impact society.”
ANCIENT HISTORY: “ A course of study in Ancient History empowers
students with multi-disciplinary skills in analysing textual and visual sources, constructing arguments, challenging assumptions, and thinking both creatively and critically. Ancient History students become knowledge creators, productive and discerning users of technology, and empathetic, open-minded global citizens.”
PATHWAY A - SELECTING GENERAL SUBECTS FOR ATAR…
I am definitely going to University I am committed to mapping out a 2 year business plan;
at least 5 GE subjects
I am a genuine academic student with a proven track
record of success in year 10
I am achieving A’s and B’s in General subjects I am highly organised and motivated I am committed to External Examinations at the end of
Year 12
INTER-SUBJECT SCALING- GENERAL
Inter-subject scaling is where raw scores for a given subject are adjusted
so the results for that subject can be compared fairly with the results of any other subject.
Inter-subject scaling will not enhance or diminish a student’s
performance in their subjects. https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar-my-path/atar
Students should choose subjects that:
- they enjoy and think they will achieve well in
- that are subject prerequisites for tertiary courses that they will be
seeking entry to.
INTER-SUBJECT SCALING APPLIED SUBJECTS AND VET
Each Applied Subject will have scaled scores based upon the letter grade
awarded in the subject
Each
VET Level (Certificate III, IV and Diploma) will have a single scaled score, independent of the area of study, mode, duration or study provider.
PREREQUISITES, ASSUMED KNOWLEDGE AND RECOMMENDED STUDY
Prerequisites are entry requirements (i.e. audition, senior subjects,
portfolios) you must meet before you are considered for entry. ENGLISH
The most common prerequisite is the English subject (Units 3 & 4, C)
- r English & Literature Extension.
SCIENCE
Subjects will be accepted: Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental
Science, and Physics.
Assumed Knowledge= minimum level of knowledge Recommend Study= beneficial to help understand material
PATHWAY B SELECTING A COMBINATION OF SUBJECTS
I might want to go to University/TAFE – ATAR Eligible- a combination of
4 GE subjects and 2 Applied subjects or VET Qualifications Or
I might want to go to TAFE- ATAR ineligible- any combination of GE
and Applied Subjects or VET Qualifications with no more than 3 GE subjects
I am committed to mapping out a 2 year business plan; with a
combination of General, Applied and VET
I am achieving C’s in General subjects Are you committed to completing some External Exams at the end of
Year 12?
PATHWAY C: I WANT TO TRANSITION INTO THE WORKFORCE
I might want to transition into work or a Trade when I finish year 12 I might want to go to TAFE I can pick a combination of General, Applied Subjects and
VET Qualifications with no more than 3 General Subjects
I am committed to mapping out a 2 year business plan; with a
combination of General, Applied and VET
I am interested in pursing a TAFE at Schools Program or a School-Based
Traineeship or Apprenticeship
Are you committed to completing some External Exams at the end of
Year 12?
PATHWAYS B/C TO HIGHER EDUCATION TAFE
No ATAR required for entry in a tertiary course at
TAFE
Entry requirements for TAFE= Completion of Year 12 Pathway to University via a UNI/TAFE 'dual award'
program.
PATHWAYS B/C TO HIGHER EDUCATION UNIVERSITY
USQ will be accepting
VET qualifications as well as ATARs for applications from 2021.
UQ will no longer allow school-leaver applicants to receive a standalone
selection rank on the basis of a VET award alone
QUT will accept students with an ATAR , however if they have
completed an eligible VETiS qualification at school, then that VETiS qualification can also be assessed for entry independently.
