Welcome to The University of Alabama’s… Office of Health Promotion and Wellness August 26, 2010 Introducing the Crimson Couch to 5K Crimson Couch to 5K - a team-based health challenge. *Teams of 3-5 individuals will strive towards increasing their physical activity and health over a 9 week period (Sept-Nov) Couch 5K ROCKS! Crimson To *Individuals are also welcome to participate 1

Introducing the Crimson Couch to 5K Program Overview: This 9 week physical activity and wellness program is designed specifically for UA faculty and staff to provide the tools and resources to help motivate individuals to move more, feel better, and improve their quality of life. The program will kick off the week of September 8 & 9 in eight (8) various locations and culminate with a closing Crimson Couch to 5K (3.1mi) Walk/Run Event on November 14. Your Crimson Couch to 5K Benefits Benefits to Participating: • C – Confidence in your ability to move more • O – Opportunity to manage or prevent chronic health conditions • U – Unique sense of accomplishment • C – Consistent increase in energy, muscle tone and weight control • H – Help and support from others 2

Motivating employees to participate 800 Participants Each Captain/ Trainer has at least 4 Team Members Each Coordinator has 5 Crimson Couch to 5K Captains/Trainers 40 Crimson Couch to 5K Lead Coordinators Office of Health Promotion and Wellness Kick-off September 8 and 9 Kickoff Events held in eight campus locations September 8 and 9 • Pick up your training packet which will include your training guide, • calendar of activities, and fitness tips Individual/Team forms will be available to track your progress • throughout the training program Also receive tips and resources from our partners including: University • Recreation, Exercise Physiology Club, Tuscaloosa Track Club, and Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Optional health checks to include body mass index, blood pressure, waist and hip circumference will be available as desired. 3

Join Us: Crimson Couch to 5K Check-In Locations Kickoff – Midpoint – Final Check-Ins Wednesdays : Thursdays : Sept. 8, Oct. 6 & Nov. 3 Sept. 9, Oct. 7 & Nov. 4 Rose Administration Ground Level Russell Hall 7:30 AM- 9:30 AM 7:30AM-9:30AM University Medical Center Facilities (Shop Area) 7:45AM-8:45AM 11:05AM-12:00PM Bidgood Hall (Room 34) Coleman Coliseum 10:00AM-11:00AM 12:15PM-1:15PM Ferguson Center Brewer Porch (Break Room) 11:30AM-1:00PM 3:00PM-4:00PM Capstone College of Nursing 2:00PM-3:00PM Training Locations & Times Campus Outdoor Team Trainings begins September 13  Days: Tuesdays & Thursdays  7:00am, 12:10pm & 5:10pm  Locations:  The Quad/Denny Chimes  Outdoor Pool Complex/Student Recreation Center  Aquatics Center  Additional times and locations will be available based on availability of trainers/ captains/others.  Trainers available for both walking and running groups  Group Training will be led by Health and Wellness, University Recreation, Department of Kinesiology, coordinators and additional trainers/volunteers will conduct group trainings at various locations (twice weekly). 4

Incentives Kickoff: Drawstring backpack with Crimson Couch to 5K logo • Mid-Point: Crimson Couch to 5K Visor or Hat • Final Check-Ins: Crimson Couch to 5K T-shirt to wear at the event. • Additional Incentive: For College/School/Division with the greatest percentage of participation in the 1 st Annual Crimson Couch to 5K. Campus-wide recognition and $1,000 dedicated to a wellness related event or initiative. 5K Run/Walk Event Crimson Couch to 5K Walk/Run Event Sunday, November 14, 2010 Check-in from 12-2:00 pm • Crimson Couch to 5K Run/Walk begins at 2:00 pm from the Student • Recreation Center 5K Run/Walk Event will be free to faculty and staff who are enrolled in • the Crimson Couch to 5K training program and children under 18 $10 race fee for faculty, staff, spouses, and others who are not enrolled • in the Crimson Couch to 5K training program 5
