  7. Reasons to select this school We aim to provide an outstanding education for all children: • Transition • Settling in programme • Qualified staff • Inside and outside classrooms • Quality first teaching • Snack/lunch arrangements • A Typical School Day • Parent/school partnership

  8. Transition  We contact pre-school establishments  We visits some pre-school providers  Visits to Sydney Russell Primary School for parents/carers take place in July.  Stay and Play session in July  Staff visit the home of each child in September, to talk to parents.

  9. Settling in Programme  Children attend school part time for the first week. • The children come in full time during the second week They will also be able to stay for school dinners from this point.  Attending part time helps to ease children into school life and gets them use to the new environment, new classmates, the staff and the routines.  Staff spend time with the children to ensure they settle into school.

  10. Qualified Staff • There are 3 reception classes of up to 30 children. • Each class is staffed by a qualified teacher • Each class has a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) • The LSAs are paediatric first aid trained • At lunch times, the children are supervised by mid-day assistants, who are also first aid trained.

  11. Inside and Outside Classrooms  The children’s learning will take place inside and outside.  The learning will cover:  Communication and Language  Physical Development  Personal, Social and Emotional Development  Literacy  Mathematics  Understanding the World  Expressive Arts and Design These are the 7 areas of learning in Early years Foundation Stage (EYFS)  The learning environments are well managed and ensure the best possible learning takes place  Large and small scale resources are varied to support the children’s development across all areas of learning.

  12. Quality First Teaching  Reception children follow the EYFS curriculum  We build the foundations to support children throughout their time in education  The 3 prime areas of learning are Communication and Language, Physical Development and Personal, Social and Emotional Development and they are embedded into the planning, teaching and learning, throughout the year.  The 4 specific areas of learning include Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design and are planned to enable children to be challenged, at every level.  Alongside the 7 areas of learning are the characteristics of effective learning: Exploring and Playing, Active Learning and Creative and Critical Thinking which, link to behavioural attitudes to learning. They underpin the learning and development and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner.

  13. Snack and Lunch Arrangements  Children can have milk and/or water, in class  The ‘Cool Milk’ scheme entitles your child to receive free milk until just before they turn 5 years old.  Fruit or vegetables are provided (through a government scheme) for the children each day, for a snack.  At lunchtime the staff eat with the children and support them during the first few weeks. Depending on how they get on, it can be longer.  Fully trained supervisors get to know the children at lunchtime to help them to settle and encourage them to eat what they can.

  14. A Typical School Day in Reception  Children will learn morning routines: hanging coat, removing reading books from book bags, placing names into dinner baskets, writing names  Whole class teaching: Literacy  Open learning/ indoors and outdoors  Snack times  Guided groups  Phonic sessions  Lunchtime: routines like washing hands and collecting their dinner  Whole class teaching: Mathematics  Open learning/ indoors and outdoors  Guided groups  Whole class teaching: Understanding the World or Expressive Arts and design  Open learning/ indoors and outdoors  Story/music time  Children will learn afternoon routines: collecting their belongings, opening and closing book bags in readiness for home time

  15. Other Curriculum Activities • PE including dance, gymnastics and small apparatus • Cooking • Circle time • Library • IT • Gardening

  16. Parent/School Partnership • You, as parents/carers are the child’s main educators • It is important in EYFS to build a solid relationship with yourselves and work together in educating your child. • We will ask you to contribute to your child’s on going assessments; through discussions, book looks, reading record book, wow moments, homework book, phone conversations and parent evenings • Your contributions are valuable and we recognise that children will gain more from school if parents are supportive. • We will offer opportunities for you to engage in your child’s learning through meetings, workshops, book looks and fun activities e.g. Make an Easter bonnet with your child

  17.
