What apprenticeships can I offer?
There are many apprenticeship options available including Health and Social Care, Business Administration, Customer Service and Kitchen/Chef. The most common apprenticeships in the adult care sector are in health and social care. These are known as:
The Intermediate Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care (Level 2) The Advanced Apprenticeship in Health and Social Care (Level 3) Level 4 & 5 are currently in development and will be available soon
As well as attracting new staff into the sector, this is also a great way to up-skill existing staff in your organisation. There are also more specific types of apprenticeships available such as Nurse Associate and Degree Apprenticeships that are becoming available. You can read about these via www.herts.ac.uk (search for Degree Apprenticeships).
What does the 20% study time involve?
Study time counts over the whole period of the apprenticeship and is flexible, which means that a week of shadow shifts can count towards the overall 20% study time. All study time, in whatever form, will need to be logged. You can ask your chosen training provider for further information on logging study time. There are various things that constitutes study time:
Care certificate/ mandatory training Classroom based training Shadow shifts On the job learning
(i.e. how to update care plans)
Study time in office to complete coursework
3 month probationary period - £6 per hour 3 - 6 months following successful probation - £6.50 per hour 6 -12 months achievement of key skills - £7 per hour

The state of the adult social care sector and workforce in England
Published Monday 24 September 2018
A quarter of the workforce (25%) were on a zero-hours contract (335,000 jobs). The staff turnover rate was 30.7%, equivalent to around 390,000 leavers in the previous 12 months. Many of these leavers move to other roles within the sector as 67% of recruitment is from within adult social care. Adult social care has an experienced 'core' of workers. Workers had, on average, 8.2 years of experience in the sector. The vacancy rate was 8.0%, equivalent to around 110,000 vacancies at any given time. The majority of these vacancies (76,000) were care workers. A fifth of all workers (320,000 jobs) were aged over 55 years old. The majority (83%) of the adult social care workforce were British, 8% (104,000 jobs) had an EU nationality and 10% (130,000 jobs) a non-EU nationality. According to the Government’s “EU Settlement Scheme: statement of intent” the rights of EU citizens living in the UK will not change until after 31st December 2020.

DoH commissioned research to uncover good practice examples in attracting and retaining workers. The research confirmed what we already thought; that combining good communication, training and worker independence creates motivating and rewarding environments which leads to higher level of staff satisfaction and loyalty. The research found that addressing these issues should see an increase in retention levels.
